Exhaust Xpipe
Mate asking , He wants a more throaty sound from exhaust . has a 12reg xkr , askes my advice hence me asking the panel . Now the xpipe is a cheap way to get a more throaty noise from the exhaust but the xkr has 2 middle box resistors then the factory back box . What one needs to be done . front or back or both ?

Beware, if you remove both the central muffler and the resonators you run a high risk of bad drone. That's what resonators are for, to cancel out the resonance which causes drone.
On my old XFR I removed just the central muffler and replaced it with an H-pipe (similar concept to an X-pipe) and left the resonators in place, zero drone with the stock rear mufflers yet a deeper exhaust note.
On the XFR the central muffler comes first after the cats then the resonators are downstream of that, I guess it would be the same on the XKR.

It's also the factory setup for the XKR-S, so there's that... Plus the X-Pipe with no resonators is required for doing an XKR-S tune on an XK/R. Actually any tune to be honest.
On the OTHER hand, dozens of members in the X150 (including myself) have done this exact X-pipe sans-resonators with OEM back box mod and it's fantastic. Zero drone and wonderful noises.

So just to be clear , around a foot from the cat cells their is the first Resonater box then about 2-3ft from that the second resonator box then another 3ft or so the back large box . So advice is to remove both resonates boxes and have 2 X pipes then the back large box , He don't want the extra noise to be intrusive.

Thanks Jagtoes . Looking at your photo you have replaced the second of the resonater boxes with the Xpipe , Is that right ?
Jagtoes, looking at your photo it seems to me as from the Cats yours has then straight pies to the X box then pipes to the large rear box "muffler, were as on the normal xkr their seems to be 2 resistor sections that have to be converted into X box , so will tell mate to get them both changed to X box

I'll try to explain it again. The picture you see is from the Jaguar Factory. I did not modify the system . It is OEM. The pipes from the Cat's are straight to the X pipe and then straight back to the rear back box. This is the OEM option PAE , PERFORMANCE ACTIVE EXHAUST that came on the car from the factory. You only need ONE X pipe . You can buy this pipe section from Jaguar. It has a Jaguar part number. It is not aftermarket.
One other note, your XKR George has two, but the XK by default has one.
People who take the first box out on their XKR to put in an X pipe are making a much bigger modification than putting in an X-pipe on a XK.
If he wants something to really growl and roar and he doesn't live in a place with noise restrictions then replace the stock muffler box in the rear bumper with a setup that just connects to tips and forgets the box entirely.
That might be too much, but if he really wants it to kick, that would do it.

These were the three options available:

Find a back box from an XKR with a factory muffler bypass.
Manually lock the active muffler into the bypass mode.
