Question External Temp is 0

My external temperature is read 0 occasionally. I think the sensor must an issue.

Where is the thermometer?

how do I access it?

What should I do when I get to it?

I forgot to address it when I had the car in for an oil change. On another note, the car was bone dry underneath and impressed with little details Jag's done under the car.

My 07 did that...I just realized I have never seen a 0 degree readout in my 2010...

I think I read somewhere that this may be a software issue...

My 2007 XK also suffers with this fault. I read somehwere (may have been a Tech Bulletin) that it occurs around 59*F. Somehow the system registers 59*F as 0*F. I suspect this is what's happening now we have the cooler days. It happened to me last week in MD and i noticed after a few minutes that the tempoerature had moved to 58* and all was OK. So simple fix is to keep away from 59*F air!!!!

Here's my guess................I downloaded the XK manual from TOPIX and in the air conditioning sectioni where the title is AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR there is a picture of it and tells one how to remove and replace it. It says............Raise and support the vehicle..............Remove the radiator splash shield.............remove the ambient air temp sensor.

The picutre isn't all that helpful for someone (me) who hasn't done this yet, but the sensor seems to be on a pigtail coming off a harness and I'd extimate the pigtail is about three to four inches long.

So it seems you need to get under the car and remove the splash guard and find a harness bout a inch in diameter with a short pigtail going to a sensor. SEEMS to be closer to the C/L of the car.

UPDATE: This from the manual: The sensor is mounted on the vehicle center line behind the lowr front grill, and can be accessed from undernath the vehicle.

The sensor is hard wired to the ECM and its signal is transmitted to hte instrument cluster on a high speed CAn BUS. tHE INSTRUMANT CLUSTER ACTS AS A GATEWAY AND TRANSMITS THE AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE signal to the ATC module on the medium speen CAN bus. Sorry 'bout the caps, finger slipped and I ain't a gonna go back and fix it.

I went out to my car. Lay on the ground in front of the car. Look thru the opening just below the middle of the liscense plate. It's plain to see and you can touch it with your fingers from the front of the opening.

My car has the same problem. I ordered a new ambient temp sensor and replaced it. It still does it. I'm used to it now and just wait for it to correct itself.

I own a Chevy Venture (hey, someone has to own 'em) and it gave false readings on the overhead display (ever read 32* temps on a summer day in Texas?). I removed the plug from it and reseated it and alls been well for a couple of months now (temperature reading, not the vehicle).

True enough, the temp does read 0 when it should read 59.

Thanks. I just ran into the 0 temp issue when it was 59. This thread saved me a lot of time trying to figure it out. I guess I'll have the TSB performed next time it's at the dealer.

59 degrees is used by the aviation industry as 'standard day' temperatures when calculating engine or aircraft performance. Coincidence?

It's actually exactly 15 Deg C. Maybe that's the number they messed up as 59 seems so random.

No, it was a rhetorical comment but you have to realize there are new people coming to the site who don't know a lot of these issue, some of them in the UK, and it happened to me today. 0 deg. One earlier comment was about 59 being a strange number. I was pointing out that it's not in deg C.

The car was fully reprogrammed in 2008 and still has the problem (I think the TSB was 2007). My local Jag dealer usually returns the car with more problems than what it went in for and I have just about burnt all the bridges with them. Unless I drive some distance I cannot get yet another expensive update. You might see one of my posts to illustrate what they did to my car for a broken $15 antenna for $997. I wish Jaguar would encourage 3rd party service as they are clearly not interested. I live in a small NJ town and there are 2 Porche expert garages and one for Mercedes and no Jaguar ones for 20 miles.
