I have two pieces of Tumi luggage that fit in the trunk with the top down. They have a medium sized wheeled garment bag and a carry only duffel bag which also has space for an IPad etc. They are made out of ballistic material in their Alpha collection. If you'd like I'll take pics and show you. And there's still room for other things in the trunk. Remember this is with the top down. If you have a Tumi store near you I'd check them out. Let me know if you want pics.

That would be great if you would mind! I'd really appreciate it. It would really be helpful for my upcoming roadtrip through the southwest!

Come on! I got eight sets of purrrfectly fitting bags for under twenty bucks!

I would just "bag" the baggage and neatly arrange everything you'll wear in the trunk and hope it doesn't leak Ha, Ha!.... the trunk becomes your suitcase......?
Also, don't forget to take your AAA card.
