Default Foam Insulation for XKR 4.2L Engine Appearance Cover

From: 2009 Jaguar XKR Parts - Jaguar Parts Center - Call (800) 510-1401 for Genuine Jaguar Parts and Accessories

The foam insulation inside my plastic Engine Appearance Cover (#1, Part Number: C2P5448) has deteriorated over time and I'd like to replace it. However, I was unable to find that insulation as a replacement part, separate from the entire cover assembly that costs $113.70.

The OEM foam insulation is only about 1/4" thick and seems to function primarily to insulate sound, although there is a separate aluminum section glued to the inside of that cover that appears to function as a heat shield. My primary concern is to protect the paint on the hood from damage due to excessive heat.

I found several automotive heat shield products on Amazon that might work. Here's one for $21.11 without any foam but with an adhesive backing:
Amazon.com: Heatshield Products 721202 HP Heatshield Products Mat 0.030 Amazon.com: Heatshield Products 721202 HP Heatshield Products Mat 0.030" Thick x 24" Wide x 24" Heat Shield Barrier Cloth: Automotive

Anyone have any better ideas?

Thanks,

Stuart

Thanks. I checked that eBay listing and have 2 concerns. First, although the title is for a "5 sq. ft. ... automotive thermal insulation mat" it is actually for 5 separate pieces (1 sq. ft. each) and is not a one-piece mat. I want to use a single piece. Second, under Item Specifics, the listing states: "Type: Acoustic Dampening Material" and "GTMAT Automotive Sound Control Sound Deadener". I am concerned that the foam material in that product will break down from the heat under the engine appearance cover since there are no specs regarding heat range tolerance. I decided to pass on this item.

I did find this on eBay for $20.84 delivered, from Hong Kong: Self Adhesive 120cmx100cm Aluminum Foil Foam Engine Heat Insulation Mat for Car | eBay

I ordered it and will let the forum know what I think after I receive it.

Stuart:

If your ebay insulation from China does not work, I highly recommend using the HeatShield Products Armour Heat Shield. I have used the HeatShield product on my Formula F1000 race car. They have 2 products that would work well under the cover, and can be cut to exact dimensions.

See the HeatShield products website for the 2 products.

Peel and Stick Heat Shield | Heatshield Products

Carbon Fiber Heat Shield | Heatshield Products

The HeatShield I used was just inches from the engine exhaust, protecting both my own interests as the driver, and protected me from the gas tank, which is located on the other side of the firewall and under the drivers butt.

Here's a few photos of my personal application. This mayerial is of extremely high quality. That is what you want and need.

Thanks, Richard. Unfortunately, the HeatShield product #180025 (comparable size) costs way too much - $221.80 delivered on Amazon. At that price, it makes more sense to buy a new Engine Appearance Cover for $113.70 instead of trying to fix my old one. I'm hoping that my $20.84 heat shield mat from Hong Kong does the trick.

Stuart:

You don't need a big piece.

Amazon.com: Heatshield HP Armor, 24" x 24" - 1/2" Thick: Automotive Amazon.com: Heatshield HP Armor, 24" x 24" - 1/2" Thick: Automotive

Amazon.com: Heatshield HP Armor, 24" x 24" - 1/4" Thick: Automotive Amazon.com: Heatshield HP Armor, 24" x 24" - 1/4" Thick: Automotive

Not sure the $20.00 item will provide enough shield for the heat. There is no heat rating for the $20.00 item. It may work well, however.

Keep us posted.

Stuart
I received the above heat shield insulation mat today and it exceeded my expectations. The aluminum is bonded to the foam and the foam is self-adhesive

To fit it to the inside of my Engine Appearance Cover, I made a template from two sheets of newspaper. One double page sheet was not large enough so I joined two pages together with masking tape. I taped the newspaper to the inside of the cover so it wouldn't move around and then used a Sharpie marker to trace the contours of the cover onto the newspaper. I then removed that template, cut it out, and taped it to the heat shield insulation mat. I used scissors to cut the mat to the shape of the template (I cut it a little oversized - I didn't want it to be short) and then fitted that mat to the inside of the cover. I used a razor knife to cut out the holes for the mounting screws and trim the excess around the edges. Here's the result:

No problem attaching the finished cover to the engine. The foam is less than 1/4" thick and does not interfere with the attaching screws.

The package included a single piece mat that was more than enough to do 2 covers (4.2L XKR; not sure about the 5.0L cover). I have a large piece left over (more than half) that can be used to complete another cover. If anyone is interested, the price is $14.00 delivered USA, except AK and HI. ($10.50 + 3.50 postage). PM me if you're interested.

Nice...so glad the mat worked out for you. Now you're protected, at least the hood.

Smart idea. Nice work and fit.

Great thread. Mine fell apart to the point that I just left the whole cover off. I think I will try to replace it using your method as I also could not find the foam part number.

Following up on my "el cheapo" DIY heat shield insulation, it is still intact with no problems. Good stuff!

I took mine off - holds too much heat in there - I found that the heat had caused the supercharger pressure pipes to the sensor to become really brittle and fell apart when moved.

I was reading the F type forum - some guy measured a 50 degree temp difference with the cover off:

The Jaguar XKR engineers and designers incorporated the engine appearance cover for a reason. I agree with Stuart S, and I would want to protect the hood from excessive heat underneath by keeping the cover on as designed.

If anyone wants to remove the cover, they are certainly doing it at their own risk of possible damage to the paint on the bonnet.

I guess I have a question from an observation I had . I only looked at 1 XKR-S and I thought that they don't use the engine cover or maybe it was pictures of the XKR-S GT that doesn't have the cover. If that is what is done then why wouldn't the heat be a problem with those cars. I can't see the engine heat being a problem with the paint.

The Jaguar XKR-S does have an engine cover.

Iv had the cover off since the day i got it 8 month ago.. I think the vents do a good job of letting the heat out without overheating the hood.
