Default Front end knock VIDEO

Car is parked and off

when I move the steering wheel left to right slightly I’m getting a knock noise from the front suspension

Don’t see anything obvious that would be making this noise

anyone have any ideas?

apologies for the annoying car alarm

Seems to obviously be the tie rod end. But its loud, and not in good shape.

thank you! Will check inner tie rod. Outer side boot seems firmly in place

Street cat, I see the opposite! The inner rod is still. Usually its the outer. If I was told by the staff that's it the inner, I would change both. There are some inexpensive and good aftermarket parts around. Its not Jag difficult.

Could be any one of the suspension or steering joints. If you can get someone else to jiggle the steering you can often clamp your hand on the various joints and arms and feel where the play is.

If changing one side, it's best to change the other at the same time. Make sure you have an experienced shop.....changing the inner tie rod if not careful can upset the steering rack seal. You don't want to replace the rack. Good luck.

thanks - when i look at the outer in the video the rubber boot and assembly seems to move all at the same time. wouldn't you expect some "looseness" between the boot, bottom and top of the outer tie rod?

Now I see the inner moving as well. Yes, most like likely the inner. So change both, or buy both, and then ask a competent INDI mechanic to change, as I mentioned. Rockauto has a big selection. The popular parts with a heart, would cost &75.

For those of us still learning.
Is this something that would be detectable with the car on stands and giving the wheel a very firm back and forth, top bottom and sides?

Circumnavigator, yes. Facing the free wheel, rock it left and right to test the tie rods. Then rock it top and bottom to test the top and bottom ball joints, for play. There shouldn't be any play, either way.
