Knock on front suspension
As the others have said, more info is needed about the circumstances when you hear the sound. But I'll go out on a limb and say that it's your upper shock mounts (one or both of them). The rubber bushings might appear to be ok, but they wear out very quickly if the upper plate was tightened too much, and the damage is not always visible. When that happens, there can be a frequent clunk, click sound even if you don't think you're hitting a bump. I've replaced mine a few times until I got wise enough not to tighten the top nut very tight.

Engine mounts to check.
A brake check rev of the engine with the bonnet up, looking at the engine movement will show one side rise if failed. Underside there will be oil stains on the subframe below the mounts.

If it's a clunking noise, I'd suspect the upper shock mounts. I changed these many years ago on my first 2000 VDP with those black rubber bushing mounts. After that there was still clunking so I changed everything rubber mounted suspension related and still the clunking. Finally changed the upper mounts with those ones with the yellow bushings. On three of these, my experience is it is always the upper shock mount: both sides on first 308; left side on second (replaced first time with hard neoprene insert -- look for BFH method -- knocked badly when cold; then with Mehle unit, then right side with Uro); third, both sides with Uro, now right side knocks when really. cold <0*C/32*F, replacements from Rock Auto in hand). See #9.
Front sway bar bushings also candidates.
Then motor mounts, see Sean's #5.

Dear Jaguar Enthusiasts,
The knock problem was finally solved by additionally replacing the left front lower rear control arm with the ball joint and the sway bar end links. Now she drives almost like new.
