Default Fun Day! My 07 XK coolant spewing onto my engine

After just 1 month of ownership, coolant started spewing all over my engine. I literally drove it to the service door in a cloud of steam.

I guess I'll find out how much it will be to replace either the hose or coolant tank. With no loaner, I'm stuck at home for awhile...

Glad you made it to the shop and I hope it is minor.

A word of advice though if this ever happens to someone else...get it towed. These aluminum engines can be destroyed in a heartbeat when they overheat.

This is unfortunate, but absolutely not typical...occasionally the hose outlet from the coolant reservoir will crack if someone has leaned on the reservoir (I know of one case of this). Please let us know what the cause turns out to be.

Happened to me recently. Lower plastic nipple on the plastic coolant tank cracked. $200.00 new tank and labor at my indy. 84K miles. Good luck.

Best,

Thanks guys for the support!

A quick update on the email and phone call I got today:

Sir,
In reference to our conversation earlier, the following and the list of items that need replacement and their respective prices:

1 Cooling line, water rail, and thermostat housing--$1196.59
2 Rear sway bars, rear toe bars and alignment----$1,383.45
3 Transmission electrical connector housing and transmission pan (leaking). --- $1,350.92.

The total for the repair is $3,970 including $40 for shop charge.
Please I will be expecting your response on which one to do sir. Thank you very much sir and have a love day.
..............
Keep in mind I just bought this from a very reputable dealer a little over a month ago. I suspect the rear-end and transmission were in need before I purchased the vehicle. I plan to meet with the service manager Friday and have him conference in the salesman and business manager. The coolant issue was more expensive than I thought but, not something that they would've known was a problem.

I'll update on Friday :\

Can probably skip the sway bars and toe bars unless you notice some odd handling behavior. At least until you can get some room to breath from these other more urgent repairs!

Can't address #s 2 & 3 as I've no experience with those issues.

However, # 1, yes. The plastic thermostat housing is a known weak point so about a year ago I had it and the thermostat replaced as a preventive measure.
Total cost around $200. As I mentioned previously, coolant tank recently replaced due to a leak for about $200. All work done by a reputable indy.

Not sure what a water rail is.

Good luck and keep us updated.

I am not sure why anyone would need to replace a rear swaybar or even a toe-bar. Particularly on the swaybar the only things that might wear are the rubberized bushings (cheap) and potentially the end-links that connect the swaybar to the suspension arms. Would really help to get a second estimate if you could get the car to a different independent shop. Like amcdonal said, unless you notice some clunking from the rear suspension or some weird handling the swaybar issue could be put on hold. The car would be perfectly drivable with even with the rear swaybar disconnected or removed. Most people would not notice the difference in handling with or without the rear bar.

Bad luck, but your lucky there wasn't engine troubles. As i'm aware there is plastic thermostat housing on just the XK not the XKR. The XKR dosn't have an issue with this thermostat problem, But i stand corrected. Other answers to this would be good.

And hold on....the transmission pan and the "electrical connector housing" are leaking...these items for the ZF transmission (authentic OEM, not after-market) are easily available from on-line sources (in fact I have them in my spares cupboard in case I ever need them) for less than $200. You take these to a transmission shop and ask them to replace them while they do a fluid change (the pan is a normal replacement item since it contains an integral filter and the "mechatronic sleeve" - which is what the "electrical connector housing" means is accessible at this time and is also a recommended service replacement item). It is the ZF Lifeguard fluid that is expensive but there are substitutes if money is an issue (I personally would not skimp on this) - and the ZF fluid is also available from on-line sources at reduced prices. Your dealership has gone to some trouble to find defects - the chances are that at least some of this work (the suspension work and the transmission work) falls into the "nice to do" rather than the "must do" category. The cooling issues should be looked into, but what is a "water rail" on an XK? and a "cooling line"?
