Default HELP!!!!

My 2013 XKR is at the dealership. The bands supporting the gas tank are corroded., one is hanging. I was told it is a 12-hour job to replace them. Does this sound right? Is this common for this model after only 10 years? No problem with my 1992 968 or
2002 Z06.

What is your dealer's hourly labor rate? I suspect it's well over $200 per hour.
2023 Hourly Service Rate
That's over $2,400 to replace those straps.

At first glance, that time appears to be excessive, but there may be a lot of components in the way that must be removed to get to the gas tank. You should get a written, detailed explanation of that time from your Service Adviser. You may also want to get quotes from other local repair shops.

This might help:

Good luck!

Well, if its done by the book…
And the dealer would only go by the book. Something like that I would have gone to my Inde.

LOL, Of course, that’s only double the typical visit for service for my xkr.

Its not a good idea for a 10 year old car to go to the dealer if it can be helped.
REJOINING two metal straps or replacing them is a common job for all cars.
Time to find a replacement garage near you and on the way get 3 opinions on how they can fix one or both straps..

Since I saw a dealer quote $4,000 to replace two headlights because the lenses had clouded (a $30-50 repair), I'll go anywhere than the dealer. To me that was outright misrepresentation and theft.

Any job over $500, get several quotes from indy's.

Hey, isn't the Evap Canister right above the tank? Or is that above the diff, I can never remember. Anyway, if it's handy, maybe replace that also, since 'right there'.

It is. From the 5.0 manual, below. The MM for the 5.0 says the differential (and rear axles?) needs to be dropped. Lotsa hours -- but as Sony says, rejoining straps is a pretty common task, and might eliminate the need to drop the tank.

But if you *have to* drop the tank, I agree that doing the canister is a good idea since it's out.

I'd have a good look at the straps before committing to a specialist. With a single hex bolt and a knockout hinge pin as securing, it could be one of those jobs where a little ingenuity and scraped knuckles saves a fortune.

My kid's 2007 is parked at my lift, maybe I'll take a look at the requirements for this job. His back box is already off because there was cat material in it, but that only takes like ten minutes.
Edit:
Yeah, the pin-end of the strap is hanging out like a matzo ball. No problems there.
The bolt-end is way up behind the tank and above the rear bottom brace thing, but I put a 1/4" drive extension with a socket up easily to the bolt head (shown in picture, but hard to see). SO, it'd be easy to REMOVE the strap, but a bit more difficult to get it installed. Totally doable, and nowhere near the most difficult bolt I've ever dealt with.
I would estimate the entire actual WORK time to be maybe 45 minutes, then the extra 15 minutes in prep and cleanup. Plus parts, of course.

OKAY.... looking again at the pin end in the picture, I don't see how to get the pin OUT. Usually the bracket is open-ended and it slides up and out, but I don't see that here and I didn't look while the car was on the lift. Therefore, maybe a bit more difficult if that pin is captive? Maybe it's punchable from the side, at least MADE punchable with a drill bit or disk grinder. Yeah, that's what I would do.
I'm back to about an hour, maybe a bit more.

The workshop manual shows that the pins push out:

Ok, so I was under the car today, and took a look at those pins, and yes, there is a hole big enough, at least on one side, to push the pin out, but you’ll either need to release the bolt at the other end, or cut the strap, to remove the tension, so the pin can be move up to the point where it can be pushed sideways.

Problem is the right-side fuel tank strap (P/N C2P15639 is on back order !!! Been emailing all over, no one has it. Back to one of my original questions: Why did they rust out after only 10 years. No problem with my 21 year old Vette or 31 year old Porsche. Is it common for this model: 20013 XKR ?
Thank your all for your comments.

No one can answer why your strap rusted out. It's not common and I think this is the first I've heard of it, having owned models back to the mid 80's. As to a back ordered strap, any metal shop will fabricate an exact copy for you and it will likely cost less than the OEM part. You could also have one pulled from a breaker. There are quite a few stories on this forum about back ordered parts and TATA motors is in a world of hurts in that regard. This isn't something that needs to be genuine Jaguar. Best of luck.
