Had to park in the driveway yesterday because my garage bar is used for some construction stuff I have goin on. So I park and leave my driver's window cracked because I am a complete moron
It rains all last night because the universe hates me.
Good news: mostly just some wet carpet, and the window wasn't down the full way
Bad news: the seat adjuster knobs are shedding their silver foil paint and it looks like I was at a rave being covered in the stuff.
Is there a way to replace just this panel of switches?
I did a quick search and could not find the buttons for the seat switch assembly on sale separately. I also looked at my switch assembly to see if there was an easy way to remove the buttons, but did not see one - no set screws, e.g. I was wary of trying to pull the buttons off, but you may want to try that. If you have to bite the bullet and get a whole switch assembly, here is a link on the Suburban Auto Parts site (BTW, have never bought from them, so caveat emptor). Also, suggest you check will local jagshops to see if they have or can direct you to a wrecked XK from which you could get a replacement assembly.
You can buy the entire switch assembly from a breaker's yard, but they aren't plentiful and do cost a bit. The nice shiny ones are only from 2010+, if I remember correctly.
I don't know! It was rained on fo 10 hours or so, but still seems like excessive damage! Maybe it is a bit acidic? Who knows. Arrrgh
is it ready to replace the assembly? I might just buy a new one if it is plug and play
Attached is a diagram of the seat switch assembly, from the perspective of the inside of the door panel. Although the diagram did not have accompanying detail, it looks like it is fastened with 4 torx screws and has a single connector attaching it to the cables leading to the seat actuators. The diagram was copied from procedure 76.34.01 of the Service Manual for a 2007 X150 - it's for removing the door trim panel; the procedure is probably the same for your MY but I am sure you'll want to check. If you don't have your specific service manual perhaps another member with your MY XK could help, or you can follow the directions in Grahame's sticky post "XK?XKR - Workshop Manuals & Electrical Guides" at the top of the forum.
thanks everyone! i have a few ideas, although the chrome paint may be the way i go, i dont know if i want to take the door apart. oh well, chalk this one up tp a learning experience.
just as a reminder, you guys are all an awesome group of guys. drinks on me of you ever make it up here!
I don't have the shiny version on my 4.2L.
However, I believe instead of chrome those are an aluminum coating put there by a process known as vapor despositing.
First stage would be to clean the rest of the coating off, it may be that it cleans up to the same look as the 4.2L.
You are in Michigan, correct? Check with Pacific Motors in the Detroit area, they are breakers. There is also Jaguar Heaven in Southern California as well as the items listed on Ebay. Good luck.

I was thinking the same thing, also called vacuum metalizing or PVD. We used to have a company right here in Fort Worth that used that process to restore plastic trim parts for antique and classic cars. I was going to post their web link, but just read on their web site that they don't do it anymore, rather now they only sell reproduction parts. You could do a google search and find others I'm sure that still do it. But generally vacuum metalized finishes have a clearcoat sprayed over them for protection. I just wondered if a batch of buttons got through the factory without their topcoat.
What quality ****. A 10 for jaguar as a company for the prices of their cars and the quality they offer.
With these finishes and the prices that your automobiles are sold with ...... With which automobile brands do you want to compete? ..... 🤪🤪🤪

With respect, this is nonsense. All the luxury manufacturers have "chrome" switches prepared by exactly the same process and with the same occasional problems. And similarly, regarding the "soft touch" switch and panel finishes which can deteriorate with heat and age, and which have received similar "Jaguars are crap" comments, again, every car manufacturer that uses soft touch finishes on the interiors has experienced the same issues.
If you want to find fault with manufacturers of luxury cars who skimp on quality you might want to look at Audi or Mercedes or BMW...I brought a Jag recently in to an auto trimmer to have a seat panel repaired. I asked if removing the 1000-way adjustable seat would be a problem...no problem ever on Jaguars, I was told. But Audis? He told me that mounting hardware for the seats inevitably breaks on removal. Then we have Mercedes whose cars are upholstered in Artico Leather....which is vinyl. How is that for misleading advertising? At least in Jaguars the leather is leather.

I feel sorry for you but nobody has explained it to me.
I have more than one Mercedes and more than one BMW and the upholstery is leather. It is not of any imitation in any of the cases.
I have to keep quiet about Audi because I have never had any, nor do I think I ever buy because I don't like them.
Maybe the cars you have seen that are imitation leather are very basic .... series 1 or class A .... I don't know, but in series 5 and in class E, CLK etc are made of real leather.
Jaguar are not crap far from it .... that cannot be said of any car, but they are not at the level of Mercedes.
My first Mercedes looked good the first few years, but after 22 years is when I appreciate the reality of the quality of that car.
I do not know if my xk will hold in that state for the year 2030, but seeing that low quality ... I do not know.
