Mine actually hasn't died, but as my car was only supplied with a single fob I bought another for £184 inc last week and am due to have it programmed by my Indy Friday 21st May (payday for me)

I had initially thought that with the emergency key I could only access the boot, but apparently not as seen 1m into this video you can access the passenger side (UK) or drivers side US/EU mainland


Now here's the thing, with my good fob well away from the car, so that it was registering 'keyfob not found' I inserted the unprogrammed fob into the slot in the armrest and lo and behold the car started!!

So am now contemplating not even paying the £75 fee for having the new keyfob programmed as an programmed one will start my car and means it will start any X150
Oh, bought a blank emergency key off ebay for less than £5

So total cost would be

£184 inc tax for fob (includes my 15% dealer discount)
£5 inc. for key blank delivered off ebay
£90 inc. for programming at Indy
£19 inc. for laser cutting the key blank

Total £298 (x 1.39 for USD) = $414 for a new programmed fob and cut key.

This does of course mean you can steal any unlocked X150 for the price (£184/$256) of a key-fob

PS: Anyone in Somerset UK with an XKR-S GT??

 

That is crazy! Here is a thought, maybe what you bought is your long lost 2nd key.

 

No brand new from the main dealer and won't lock/unlock the car.

Perhaps someone has attempted to add a key in the past. If they weren't successful the unit can stay in autolearn mode and will add a blank key if one is inserted in to the slot:

There are situations that can be created by failed key/IC programming attempts that could also leave
an IC in "autolearn" mode. For example, if a technician was attempting to program a total of 3 keys, but the
procedure failed after only 1 key was fully programmed; then the IC may still be in "autolearn" mode.

For this reason it is important to NEVER insert any additional keys into the SCU after a failed Key/IC programming
attempt, unless instructed to do so by IDS on-screen or elsewhere in this recovery procedure documentation.

When an IC is in "autolearn" mode, and a Smart Key is inserted into the SCU, the key code data is passed to the
IC, which can recognize whether the key is in a "default" state or not.

If this key is NOT in the default state, nothing is altered in the key or the module.
If the key is in the "default" state, the IC will instantly perform the following routine to "pair" itself with this key.

1. A new SECRET key code is generated by the IC.
2. The new SECRET code is written to the "active" key replacing the "DEFAULT" code.
3. This key code data is added to the IC's "key-ring" to complete the "pairing" procedure.

 

I had to use the emergency key twice to get into my 2007 XK when it locked itself with the engine running and me outside. With passive entry on my 2014, the Smartkey never comes out of my pocket and I've not yet needed the emergency key.

Before carrying out my own locking and docking experiments, I'm waiting for the follow-up thread - What to do when you vehicle doesn't recognise either of your Smartkeys.

Original keyfob still works for locking/unlocking/starting.

New unprogrammed key fob won't lock/unlock but will start the car if inserted into slot.

Spoke to Indy that's programming new fob next Fri and they've never heard of this before???

 

You should go to assess for sale X150 somewhere and when they offer to give you a key tell them you brought your own!

Ok so today I took my keyfob to be programmed.

My Indy tested in the slot before they did so and the car fired straight up.

They then tested it with a brand new fob from the same main dealer (they always keep at least 1 in stock) and it wouldn't start the car.

They refused to try it in any of the other x150's they had on their site though.

So looks like I've a bit of a one-off that they can't explain as have never had the experience before.

 

Thanks for the update. I suspect my explanation above is what happened.

 

I prefer to think that this is a magic X150 master key.

 

Oh, and total cost was £258 inc, so £40 less than stated un post 1, which includes the blank key cutting that I've not as yet done. So less than 360 of your USD for everything....which to me is a bit of a bargain
