Default Lost key fob

One of the key fobs has gone missing. I still have the blade as it was attached to the key ring, but the fob itself has disappeared. Now what?

Visit your friendly local JLR dealer, and open your wallet...wide!

Assume the service department position.

You don't have to buy the replacement Smartkey from your Jaguar dealer, but you'll need the dealer or an idependent mechanic with the Jaguar SDD tool to program it. Used replacement Smartkeys are available for less on Ebay but BUYER BEWARE! Read this old thread:

My total was I think just over $500, and the fools evidently didn't have a decent power supply while doing the SDD stuff, as when I got the car back it had numerous faults cuz 'battery'. They offered to 'fix' it to the tune of $800 for a new battery.

Be happy that only ONE of the FOBS has gone missing. If you had zero left, you'd have to tow to the JLR dealer and then buy TWO smart keys.

It's good that you're laughing now because you won't be laughing after you pay for the replacement key and programming! Guess how I know.

Please tell us what it comes out to be. My parents live with me, and my mom and don't drive that much, so we are going to sell their cars next spring and they'll just drive whatever I'm not driving that day. I have 3 keys for every car EXCEPT the 07 Jaguar and I'm curious.

I'll follow up on this, but this is not an urgent matter (yet) as I still have another key fob. May be awhile.

Just went through this a couple of weeks ago. I ordered a fob from Ebay, took it to an automotive locksmith who after an hour and a half told me the fob was defective. But he had several XKR key fobs in his shop and ten minutes later I had a second working fob. He charged me the same for the fob as the cheap one I bought on Ebay plus a $150 programming charge. So all in, I spent $250, and I sent the defective one back. I thought that was a very fair price.

A charge of $150 for programming that took 10 minutes is fair? Sure, that locksmith has to recover his overhead, including amortization of the Jaguar SDD, and make a profit. But that's at the rate of $900 an hour! That's more than the locksmith made when he was practicing law!

It takes at least ten minutes to get all the stuff hooked up and SDD ready, so probably 20 minutes. Dealers charge $325 for the procedure, so $975 per hour. (or $1950/hour going by the 10 minutes)
