Default New xkr headlights not self leveling.

My 07 XK has self leveling and aiming headlights. I just got two new headlamp assemblies that were installed as part of a new comprehensive insurance claim that had the front of car painted and the headlamps replaced.

the headlamps will move left and right but they do not go up and down to self level when the car starts.

I think the shop made some sort of mistake but not sure what needs to be done here.

You need to contact the insurance adjuster who handled your claim and explain why the repair is unsatisfactory and that they need to reopen your case. Be sure to follow up in writing to confirm your conversation.

Your insurance company should authorize the diagnosis of your problem by a Jaguar dealer who may be able to fix the body shop's error.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

oh I definitely called. I’m waiting to hear back from the insurance so they can come out and inspect the car.

I read somewhere the lights need to be programmed to auto level. Is this case?

I know they are aiming left and right but they are not going up and down to level like my old lights when the car comes on

The Workshop Manual doesn't suggest headlamp replacement requires programming. They should initialise and move to the correct position. I've attached the relevant extract.

Sounds like the leveling has set to default position due to component (or possible harness connector) failure. SDD is going to be required to find the precise cause. Armed with the description, you will know considerably more about it than the inspector from the insurers.

quick update on this. After a day or so, I saw the self leveling procedure start to happen after the car was started. However, the right headlight still seems higher than the left. Is there a way to adjust the light? There has to be some adjustment on the self leveling/afs headlight somewhere...

Yes, both headlights can be manually adjusted Up/Dn & L/R. There are two adjusters on each light, requires an Allen wrench. Look for white plastic caps, pop them off and go to it.

Yes, I just went to the garage and looked at them again. the Up/Dn is on top, a little outboard of center. The L/R is also on top just inboard of the top mounting tab.

where I live we get SNOW and freezing rain. To reduce glare and keep the road illuminated, I slightly lower the beam for the winter.
(a trick I learned from my winter rally driving father)
