Default OBDii/Gauges

Hi everyone. Looking for some feedback/advice on retrieving info regarding oil pressure, coolant temp and voltage utilizing the obdii port. I am pretty handy with cars but not so much with technology….. I have seen what appears to be 'easy' solutions offered by PLX gauges/Auto meter and Scan Gauge (not overly fond on the look of their 'gauge' as I prefer a true gauge face). I noticed some posts here by individuals who use Blutooth/ IPhone apps etc. but I would like to have true gauges moulded onto my A Pillar. Anyone found a simple plug n play via OBD.If not, I will do things the old fashioned way and mechanically 'tap into' the areas I wish to display. I would prefer obdii set up as it may be more accurate and easier to do….. I think.
Any feedback/suggestions are appreciated,and Happy Holidays…..

WhiteXKR, yes I have seen the thread you refereed to. Unfortunately, it is something that I do not wish to attempt….modern electronics and I are not the best of friends. I would be overly concerned over me screwing something up then having codes etc. But I do love the look of it! I am looking for an option that is a lot more plug and play, and they do seem to exist. I was hoping that a member may have installed a direct connect obdii gauge and could provide feedback on such. I thank you for your response!

There are dozens of Bluetooth OBDII adapters available on Amazon, eBay and the like. The adapter plugs into the OBDII port and connects to any Bluetooth phone. I use the App "TORQUE" and there is WAY more information in it than I will ever use. The Bluetooth Adapter I bought included two Apps; Torque and Dash Commander. I prefer torque.
The adapters are not expensive and any device will work with it. Phone, Tablet, Laptop.

Hi Cee Jay. Yes I have seen and am aware of the Bluetooth options, but, quite frankly, I want the info relayed to gauges installed in my car. Guess I'm old school on certain things - thanks for your response.

This does raise a question that I have been searching for an answer. Does anyone know if someone makes a oil pressure sending unit that will send a BT signal. It would be an interesting concept .

This system can accept external sensors such as oil pressure to supplement OBDII over Bluetooth or WiFi: Kiwi 2 OBD2 OBDII Wireless Diagnostic Scanner | Android and iPhone

(Check out this link for any that may be interested) Gauges and Sensors So far I am thinking that PLX may offer exactly what I am looking for.

I use the ScanGauge. You're right, it doesn't look traditional, but it displays 4 gauge numbers on one small display. You can customize the color so it looks good with your interior. I have mine right behind my steering wheel. I have it display coolant temp, volts, instant mpg, and mph. I don't think the obdii has oil pressure available.

Steve I don't know if I'm thinking out of the box or just dreaming. What I am thinking is , is there a "black box" oil pressure sensor that you screw into a oil pressure port and give it 12V's. It has it's own transmitter so you can wirelessly send the oil pressure to a gauge or a BT phone. Don't know if it's possible or if it has been invented but just asking.

Does the F-type have an oil pressure sending unit? If so, where, because it seems like a possibility for us to use the same location to tap into for a sending unit

TheJagWrangler.com has an adaptor for the X100 4.2L to attach an oil pressure sender to the engine, however I don't know if Steve has verified if it will fit with the X150 4.2L layout.
That doesn't help you 5.0L owners, but I seem to recall that some thread on this forum suggested that there may be a 'port' on the block that could be tapped into to connect a sender. A forum search may turn up that thread, and see if that solution panned out.

Yep, I assume you're referring to the OBDII Gauge? where to mount it without making your dash look like .....

Has anyone considered a OBDII HUD, maybe embedded into the dash? Sacrilege?

Sean, I know that its a matter of taste, but, 2 gauges imbedded into the A Pillar should not look to bad. I have already purchased an A Pillar (from a member of this site) and if I don't like the look, they won't go in.

Thanks fstbmw. I'm looking forward to the pics because I like the gauges you pointed to. I was thinking of doing the same, either direct fit (if I can find a close match to OEM) or the PLX gauge. I want to see how much of a detractor it is to the overall look. Heck, it might even enhance it, who knows. I eagerly await your pics.

I would modify the A pillar in that case and install/ cover pods like this:

PWCGP-LHD-52C Password JDM Gauge Pods - Carbon Fiber Pillar (52mm Gauges) at Andy's Auto Sport

Alternatively, I might find or more likely have made a custom bezel like this:

GS-C04 Glowshift Dual Cluster Bezel Pod at Andy's Auto Sport

I haven't found a HUD that's customizable to display only info I want to see. If I did, I would look into that.

Ultimately, while I like the HKS Camp2 and GVIF set up, the HKS are few and far between so I consider those who have it, fortunate, and the rest of have to consider it antiquated and find another solution.

Just ordered an UltraGauge and windshield flex mount; putting it by A frame and will display temp, volts and speed. Rather would have had oil psi but not available from OBDII.
Sensor from an F Type does sound very interesting................
Got to go now to cook roast beef and Yorkshire pud!!! Yum,yum

Merry Christmas..........Adrian

Sean, I also like the idea of the Dual Cluster set up that gets mounted right behind the steering wheel. For our cars, i have not found a direct fit. That is not to say it can't be done. I think that 'mechanical' gauges will be the chosen route for me. Albeit the info is not gathered via the cars computer system, it will still provide relevant and pretty damn close pressure, temp, and voltage readings. Unfortunately I will not start my project till early spring. If you get a head start, shoot me line and let me know your successes! All the best….

has anyone looked to see if there is a oil pressure port in the filter housing for 4.2's (like the XK8's)?
If not, I may look myself after New Year................

Happy New Year, Adrian
