Default Oil consumption

Is it fair to assume that there are no issues regarding oil consumption between oil changes with either the 4.2L or the 5.0L engines. The oil change post bought this to mind. Is there any difference between the NA vs. SC engines? Just wondering.

Oil levels should still be checked on a regular basis irrespective of change intervals.

I've only checked my oil levels once or twice (once recently) and it does appear that I have burned some oil since my oil change last March. That was about... 5000 miles ago.

I checked the dipstick after driving it (and having just shut off the engine) and the oil appeared to be coming up to the bottom of the hashed area on the dipstick.

Oh, the car has about 60k miles on it.

Neither does mine and I've put 40,000 miles on it in two years.

Based on what I've read here I do believe she may an oil change.

How are you supposed to read the oil level? When the car is cold? After cranking the engine?

I was surprised to see this warning about oil consumption in the Owner's Handbook:

Oil consumption-xk-oil-2.jpg
(click on the image to enlarge it)

My previous XJ8, XK8 4.0 litre and XK8 4.2 litre never used any oil and Jaguar have never included this warning in other V8 model Handbooks.

I have consequently kept a close watch on oil level but even on two fast overnight trips of more than 700 miles each, the level has not dropped.

See the extract page from the Owner's Handbook in my post #8 above.

Any individual engine could be an oil eater but as a whole I do not believe that the large volume, low revving V8s would have any measureable oil consumption.

Unless you manualy shift how often do you reach the higher revs? The car has so much torque and shifts early. It really only uses a very narrow, low power band and is above 4,000rpm only if you floor it and then only for a few seconds. I observed that my XKR-S in sport mode does not use the 1 nor 6th gear at all unless I manually interfere. It may use the 6th on the Autobahn near top speed.

Would figure there are more places for oil to burn and leak in a SC engine.

I will resuscitate this old thread with one observation: on my cross-country drives, my car ALWAYS lose 1-2 quarts. No leaking, must come out of the tailpipes. Interesting to notice that highlighted selection from the owner's manual in post #8. I remember reading it and feeling better because those x-country trips are the only time that I can keep the car above 90MPH for long stretches, and above 110 for a while at times (and I'm doing it in high temperatures, as well).
So, yeah-- I lose oil during prolonged high-speed driving. And I use the 0-20. Car's now got about 60K miles.

I have driven my car 25000 miles and had three oil changes and have completed more than 20 track days. Oil level has never moved. Always on full according the gauge.
