Hi, yesterday the pedestrian system warning light came on (2008 XK 150 Convertable ) - it cleared after a restart but came on again after 15 mins or so of driving. I have not hit anything but did go over a number of speed bumps.

I was also hot (48C / 118F) and I was sat in slow moving traffic for 30 mins or so (air con could not keep up).

Can anybody offer a place to start the investigation before I take to the dealer

The 2008 XK has a pedestrian warning system? My 2012 Volvo has all kinds of safety system and I thought it was one on the first laser/camera pedestrian systems installed on cars.

 

That I know of, the Euro version has explosive bolts to pop the hood upon pedestrian impact (may be an oversimplified explanation, sorry).... Just not a option found on cars in North America.

 

Yeah - after further reading I realized its not an option for NA.

Hopefully those with ROW models could help. Mine is GCC for Dubai

I've heard that a number of 'front end' electrical issues are traceable to bad earthing points. The one that relates to the pedestrian protection system is G03, in the rear LH side of the engine bay.

 

The pedestrian protection system can be turned off and the explosive parts removed if you want.

These have a habit of going off at random leaving you with damaged bonnet hinges and other items and the repair bill is very steep. One forum member in Australia had it happen to him and it was many thousands to repair.

It seems to be more common with the XF but not unheard of in the XK.

Jag dealers won't disable it for you, but it can be done.

 

All what has been posted above, OR you could take a look at the manual and Turn It Off. The on/off switch for the Forward Alert System The button is between the Gas/Petrol button and the Trunk/Boot button on the lower dash area. It uses the Adaptive Cruise program, but it also works independently when the Cruise Control is not on.

 

Forward Alert and Pedestrian Protection System are totally different things.

The PPS senses impact at the front of the car and deploys explosive airbags which lift the bonnet up several inches so whoever you just collected gets cushioned by the soft alloy bonnet rather than it caving in onto the top of the engine.

 

Cee Jay, the Pedestrian Protection System isn't fitted to NAS cars, which is why you're not aware of it.

I had the same with my XK in Dubai.. it gets too hot.. and then one of the front sensors gives out a false reading to the system.. happens during hot summer months or the traffic jams on Sh Zayed road ..


You can replace the sensors at Al Tayer.. but they will be expensive.. ( I think they quoted 3000Aed for me).. or you just leave it as it is.. during the winter months the error goes away.. and I haven't seen any negative impact from it.. (as long as you don't hit pedestrians).. I had mine with this error for about 2 years..


When my car got exported, I got it to a garage in NL.. and they fixed it for ~200Aed...


My advice if you want it replaced.. ask ATG to do an error message readout and get the actual message error.. post it here.. and try to get a new sensor online and replace yourself.. (should not be hard when car is elevated and you can work from below the bumper..)
