Phone docking XKR

This will sound strange but try waving the phone around in the area in front of the glove box while the it's searching for the car, or the car searching for the phone - I found my HTC wasn't found while I was holding it in my hand but if I waved it around there it paired fine.
It could be the 4S isn't compatible with the car though but I haven't got one of those phones so I can't say for sure.

I had a play with a Samsung on my '07 XKR to see if the phone book problem was still on the latest Android phones. My iPhone 4S wouldn't auto pair after that and it took a number of attempts and around 15 minutes to get it to reregister so I would just persevere.
My phone is running IOS 8 at the moment and still syncs up OK.

I had successfully paired an iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and 5S to my 2007 XKR over the 3 years that I owned her, so it should work. I wonder if the XF and the XKR have the same Bluetooth ID name and for some reason having been connected to the newer XF is confusing it? Try going into your Bluetooth list, tell it to forget all existing connections and start fresh with the XKR.
