Default Quaife LSD and output shaft bearings

Hi all,

I'm finally going to install a (Quaife QDF3W) limited slip diff in my 2008 XKR (I can't believe how Jag could have even thought it was OK to fit a straight through diff on this car).

This guy has already done it and put up a great page showing it all:
Jaguar Quaife Differential Install – Jacks Transmissions LLC

As he pointed out (and I also confirmed), Jag don't sell the output shaft bearings separately. From Jag you have to buy a whole new diff ($2750) to get them, however his web page says he found replacements, which pretty much confirmed my suspicions that these bearings would be unlikely to be specific to Jag.

Just in case I ever want to put the regular diff back, I don't want to carve up my existing diff (like he did before he found a source for new ones) in order to extract/re-use my existing bearings. Also as we're going to be removing and disassembling the diff anyway, It seems crazy to not take the opportunity to install new bearings at the same time, if possible.

I emailed Jack at Jacks Transmissions for details of the new part and his source, I also offered to buy a set of new bearings through him, however he said since he did the 2007 XKR work such a long while ago, he has lost/forgotten the details of the part number and source for new replacement bearings.

I'm writing this to ask if anyone here has a clue how I can find out which bearings are a correct replacement and also where to get them without also buying a whole new diff from Jag.

Thanks Guys,
Neil.

OK I guess it's worth putting all the info in one place now.

What you need to install a Quaife QDF3W into your 4.2L X150, X202 or X350

Here is a parts diagram to help you see what's what

So what you need....

1x Quaife QDF3W LSD center
2x Axle Bearings, Timken p/n LM603049 (race) & LM603011 (cup) also sold as "SET37"
2x Axle Seals, Timken p/n 714569, Ford p/n 2R8Z-4B416-AA, Jag p/n XR821244
1x Pinion Nut, Dorman p/n 81053, this is a "universal nut" same as Ford 8", 8.8", 9"
1x Collapsable Washer / Crush Sleeve, Ford p/n B7A4662A, Dorman p/n 81056
1x Pinion Seal, Timken p/n 3604, Jag p/n C2S1490 rep. C2S52518

If you need to change the pinion bearings, these are Timken p/n NP945727 and M88048 (race) + M88101 (cup)

I since discovered that there are a couple of suppliers offering complete kits for the Ford 8" as used on our cars;

Timken p/n DRK311, DRK311B, DRK 311BMK
"Timken Light Duty Differential Rebuilt kits include bearings, seals, crush sleeves, shims, pinion nuts, gear marking compound and sealants that are required to service the vehicle’s unit"

Hope this helps someone out.

Default Once it's off

Yeah I pre-bought bearings when I did mine that were the wrong size after all.

The only solution was once the original diff was off the car we took it to an auto parts place to get a matching set of bearings. So once the OEM diff is off just take it as is to a parts store and they should be able to supply a match.

TL Jaguar & Racing Green in the UK sell bearing kits in addition to the Quaife unit. When I bought mine from TL I also got a bearing & seal kit from them.

Would you believe, I didn't write down the bearing part numbers either...

BUT one of the bearings was supplied in a plastic bag with no number on it...

Thanks.

I did call Racing Green sales who didn't really know what I was talking about, but said their engineering dept has put lots of Quaife diffs in Jags, and gave me the engineering dept direct number. The guy that I spoke to seemed quite miffed that I wasn't going to also be buying the Quaife diff from them, but only after I said I'd buy the bearings through them, he phoned sales to tell (only) them the part number of the bearings, then put me through to sales. The price he gave me was 45 UK pounds (about $70) each, not including shipping.

During my conversation with the sales guy I asked him to confirm their part number, he told me LM603049. He then asked for my credit card and said he'd email me with a quote for shipping. I told him I'd wait for the quote before giving him my card. The email never arrived.

So I googled LM603049 and it matched a bearing that is very widely used (including in just about every Ford) and looks like it matches photos of the Jag ones on Jacks Transmissions webpage (see my original post above). They were even already 2 in stock at my local Autozone. I went ahead and bought them. They were only $14 each! (Screw your rip-off pricing Racing Green). They were Timken brand not Toyo as Cambo got above, but I think Timken is also good/reliable/recognised make right? ...or should I make a point of finding some Toyo-brand ones?

Should I get a seal kit too?

I'll post here again after the work is done to confirm if LM603049 are a correct fit or not.

Why would Quaife not have had the information readily available?

And isn't the diff sold only through the two outlets including Racing Green? In that event, they should have given the info freely as they and their partner would have been the only possible source of the diff. So they did sell it at some point.

Really good question except have you ever tried to get hold of anyone at Quaife at least in the US?

To order the diff I first tried contacting Quaife US directly several times.
I twice left messages through their website "contact us" page (they dont even list an email address on their website) and also phoned them and left a message. They haven't contacted me back at all.
Even during work/office hours there's just a recorded message on their phone. I guess they must be so rich they're just turning away business.

Not at all. There's plenty of other websites retailing them. Just google QDF3W.

Here's where i went:

Quaife ATB Differential JAGUAR XKR 2006 - 2010 QDF3W

The price including shipping (free shipping from TH Motorsports) was the lowest I could find, and also the company seems trustworthy and legitimate. (They list their contact details, actual address etc. on their website, have a return policy etc and already have positive reviews on other forums). Many of the other websites selling Quaife diffs appeared either very amateurish with just a page to put in your credit card details or had no actual company address or anything. No thanks.

I phoned TH motorsports to place the order and the guy I spoke to (Dwayne I think) was very friendly, professional and knowledgeable, so I felt good about giving them my money. Diff should be arriving as early as first part of next week.

Default Trans Fluid

JustNiz, I have the Timkens, 2 years running, no issues.

I was shocked at RGs price, I got mine for $15 including shipping, thankfully you were suave enough to get the info and pay the right price elsewhere.

I would get the seals, try Gaudin jaguar online parts.

Also this is a good time to change the Trans Fluid, you'll lose most of it anyway during the transfer. Fluid spec I used is SAE 75W-140, took half a gallon to fill the diff case after installation.

Thanks Mike. Seems like you have pretty much the same car as me (2008 XKR with alcons). Did you find much of a handling difference with the Quaife LSD fitted?

The reason I'm fitting an LSD is that the car club I belong to has a couple of 'rally' (read:slalom) events and a track day coming up soon. Last time I did a track day in my XKR I definitately fet like an LSD would improve it. Jsut wondering what the reality is.

Default Grip

As far as the handling my intention by installing the LSD was to improve grip, in reality it feels like a more controllable slide It has definitely increased my high speed cornering confidence.

If you have Dynolicious on your iphone or similar app you could do a before and after "g" reading on a corner you drive through frequently... I wish I had done one before installation.

I didn't get the specs but I can tell you that mine are still working OK :-)

I gotta say the LSD upgrade has made a huge difference in handling.
The car now has much more grip instead of wheelspin on "enthusiastic" take-offs, plus its a LOT easier to control the back-end precisely when power-sliding around slalom courses :-).

I am about to do this upgrade. Did anyone ever complete it using the Quaife+Timken bearings? I am looking at the bearings online and notice some offer with "race" included and some without so I was wondering if I need those?

Anyone find any "gotchas" during the whole process?

Pinion shaft bearing partnumber for XJR-X350 diff, Timken NP945727, finally found this number under UV light, was not readable normal way

The preload specs for the Lincoln LS (same 8" diff as the Jags) is available here Lincoln Workshop Manuals > LS V8-3.9L VIN A (2003) > Transmission and Drivetrain > Differential Assembly > Pinion Bearing, Differential > Component Information > Specifications

Pinion Bearing: Specifications
Pinion bearing preload (used pinion bearings) ............. 0.9 - 1.5 Nm (8 - 14 inch lbs.)
Pinion bearing preload (new pinion bearings)............... 1.8 - 3.3 Nm (16 - 29 inch lbs.)

The nut and crush tube / collapsable washer are also Ford parts, apparently they are exactly the same as the ones from the 8.8" diffs too, available from lots of places.

God Cambio, couldn't find that info anywhere. You're a lifesaver. Hopefully I'll have this in over the weekend now!

Just a head's up-those kits have LM603012 cups, not LM603011 cups; they're a little wider than the LM603011 cup (0.594 vs 0.656 inches, according to Timken). That's probably why they don't show up as fitting our cars!

Timken catalog here (use find 'DRK311') http://www.dtcomponents.com/files/NC...2012-Small.pdf
Bearing listing here
http://www.timken.com/en-US/products...tion_Guide.pdf

Oh, and I think the pinion tail bearing cup is M88010. That's the only one that seems to match the M88048 bearing in the Timken catalog.

Once again, huge thanks.
