Question rear axle

Friend has an 08 XK. Started with a drip from the right rear pumpkin seal. Had it replaced but still drips.
Been told by the dealer to replace the whole rear axle with a new one (!!!). Before we start a search for a used one, has anybody had the center section rebuilt and what's involved??

Are you talking about replacing just one of the half shafts or the whole differential?

If you go to jagdocs you can download the workshop manual for about $11.00 which is a pdf with like 2700pgs. It contains removal and installation instructions for pretty much everything. Half Shafts, Differential, Drive shaft.

It looks like they still have that stupid filled for life note on the differential, but I was pretty sure you can change the fluid. Saw a post here somewhere about that.

If you don't have the equipment see if you can find an indy service guy in your area.

Actually where in IL are you as I just saw NW? I'm in St Charles.

How is rebuilding the internals of the diff going to stop a leak?

The leak is at the seal. You can buy replacement seals for the Ford/Visteon diffs, which an '08 should have in it.

Have a look in this thread ==>> https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...arings-102296/

The only reason to replace a leaking diff would be if the casing is cracked.

If a dealer diagnosed a leaking seal, replaced it and it subsequently leaked, he'd be pleased to do the job again and do it right just to quieten me down!
