Default Recommend OCI and .... oil?

Hello

Having completely fixed my 2010 5.0 XK non supercharged from all issues now I can enjoy it.

With regards to oil changes? Can that be pushed to 9k miles (15k kms)? I use it mostly for mixed city highway driving.

Also, what oil would you guys recommend for an extended OCI? Here in Kuwait my options are limited and JLR spec oils are probably non existent. I got (all 5w20):

- liqui moly molygen syn blend
- liqui moly special tec syn blend
- Q8 advanced full synthetic
- motorcraft full synthetic
- AC Delco dexos full synthetic (0w20)
- mopar syn blend

Castrol can only be found in drums at the dealership so thats a no go ( approx $360 for an oil change)

Cheers

Well, you can extend it to once in a lifetime, but results might be sad. These engines are not considered as bulletproof. They are doing fine when properly maintained.

I do oil service myself and change oil 2-3 times a year (less than 2000-3000km intervals). Car used only in late spring till early autumn. Not driven in a city - only highways + some track usage. Probably too often, but it is all black when flushed.

I would not suggest extending anyhow over 10kkms. I would definitely suggest shortening it to around 5kkm intervals.

If you're in Kuwait City, the temperature from June through September exceeds 100°F (38°C). That's considered to be severe conditions and you should change your oil every 6 months. See your Owner's Handbook. If you don't have one, there's a link to download it in the Stickies at the top of this Forum.

Oil is cheaper than engines.

That is way way overkill!
Comon, we live in the 21 century. Oils have progressed since the 1950's!:-D

Read these threads in their entirety:

The question is whether 0W-20 that meets the new JLR spec STJLR.51.5122 is an acceptable alternative to 5W-20 that meets the original WSS-M2C925-A spec? Is the heavier 5W-20 a better choice because of the extreme heat in Kuwait?

It's your car, your money, and your choice.

Regardless of your choice, because of your climate, I'd change the oil and filter every 6 months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first.

true enough. however, frequently changed oil is a far better position to be in rather than infrequently changed.

And due to dust and sand and heat, I’d be changing all the filters and power steering fluid and diff fluid frequently too.

You cannot destroy your car running on a fresh oil, unlike opposite. It's a cheap, at least psychological, insurance for an engine. I pay a little over ~50EUR/60USD for a service (8l of 5w20 petronas synthetic oil + Mahle oil filter), assuming my hour of work is free Engine rebuilt - don't even want to know.

As Stuart said - your car, your money. I would also add your beliefs.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I had not factored in the ambient temp here in Kuwait (gets up to 55C in mid july - today 53C) - does that really have an effect on engine oil since engines run at 90C + temps?

I had read somewhere in the owners manual that servicing is actually 12 months or 24k kms (even though i think 24k is absurdly long) - i was thinking 15k kms is fine. However it seems from all your kind feedback and the courtesy of living in an open oven... id better change at 10k kms (6k miles) just to keep a round figure of mileage.

We do also get Pennzoil, Royal Purple and Quaker State however I have never tried those and they are a bit expensive compared to Liqui Moly and Mobil considering they are imported all the way from the USA.

actually i do not believe the 5w20 is heavier than a 0w20 - just more viscous in cold starts (0w20 is actually better and more expensive)
currently going through them ...

Yes, I belief todays oil is better and will not destroy my engine after 2000km!

Agreed. The "20" is the viscosity of the oil at normal engine temperature. The 5 or the 0 is the viscosity when the engine is cold. And even at 40 degrees C in Kuwait, that's still considered cold to an engine. Jaguar switched to 0w20 for a reason. Use 0w20.

The specified oil is supposed to be good for 15,000 miles. If you're concerned about the difficulty in obtaining the Castrol, use any other synthetic oil and change it twice as often.

Personally, I change my oil about every 5,000 miles because the cost of an oil change is minuscule in the grand scheme of things. But I'm not using oil that costs $100 per oil change. I use Pennzoil Platinum, which costs about $4/liter on sale.
