Default Recommended Maintenence??

Need some advise here from those of you experienced Jag owners with extended warrantees:
I have a 2007 XKR with approx. 34,000 miles. The 30,000 mile service was done in 2011 when the car had 30,000 miles on it. Last year it had the oil change and overall service check. Was going to take in this month for another oil change and have them check the basics, as I was advised to do by the dealer several months ago to keep the Extended warantee intact. Imagine my surpse when the dealer now suggested the 60,000 service instead of the oil change and overall car inspection.
Does this make sense when the car only has 34,000 miles on it, and only 4,000 since the 30,000 mile service 2 years ago? I think this is really unnecessary. Opinions??
Thanks,
tnt10

uhhhh...wish we knew why the 60K service was suggested.

Well, without knowing why they suggested the 60K service, it does not make sense to me that they should do that.

You may already have done so, but I would ask why they suggested 60K service.

Anyway, doesn't even sound like you need an oil change. But if they said your warranty would be impacted if you don't get one then you may need to get the oil changed for that reason alone.

Dang I am thankful to have such a competent Jaguar dealer!!!

Does the term "incentified service writers" ring a bell?

Of course! But if a certain service interval is required to maintain an extended warrantee, then what do you do? Let the warantee lapse, cross your fingers and hope nothing major goes wrong with the car?
(Tough to do when Jag has a less than stellar reliability reputation!!).
Oh, and the dealer gave no reason for the 60k service other than the 30k service had been done and all the items, et al, should be checked again-which that would include.

Take a look at the attached maintenance checklist (and, as always, cross-check with your owners manual).
Better still, print it and show to the Service Writer - always better to 'speak with facts' !

Basically, your car needs an 'A' or 'B' service every 10k miles and/or 12 months.
With the mileage these card typically do, that probably means every 12 months...
They are basically oil/filter changes + a bunch of inspections.
The only difference between them is the 'B' service adds:
- Check Battery water and replace pollen (cabin) air filter.

AND In addition, there's stuff listed at specified mileages:
- Air Filter at 40k
- Fuel Filter at 60K
- Plugs + bunch of stuff at 100K

AND In addition there's stuff needed at time intervals, regardless of mileage:
- Change Brake Fluid at 2 yrs
- Change Coolant at 10 yrs

AND there'll be any unusual items due to breakages, owner complaints etc

If you follow the Factory Schedule, it'll be hard for a warrantee company to deny coverage. And Jag have been making card like ours long enough to figure this stuff out.
If the Service Writer disagrees, ask him why he knows better than the Factory !

I would guess you need a 40k service (thats a 'B') + (and this is important) a Brake Fluid Change.
If its more that a couple of years old, I'd also have the battery load-tested, and replaced if weak. That'll save you intermittent problems, or heartache somewhere on the road....

Good Luck

Jeremy gives good advice. It always pays to take on a modicum of knowledge re the maintenance and up keep of major possessions such as cars and houses. There is no shortage of folks trying to sell us stuff we don't need. Fortunately, our cars come with owners manuals.

I don't mean to single out Jag service operations. The policy of "up selling" is a characteristic of most service providers from bicycles to space ships.

Jeremy
It would be appreciated if you made a pdf available for the previous model (X100)
I am sure a lot of guys would find this info useful, if possible.
Cheers

Thanks JeremyB! You gave me a lot to work with, and direction as well. The only thing that I did already take care of is the battery issue-replaced with a new interstate approx 8 mos ago.....
Thanks again,

Default Technical Info for X100 models

Hi Brian,
I downloaded the Maintenance Checklist from Jagdocs
JagDocs, The Source for Jaguar Documentation!

They have a wealth of stuff on there, for all model Jags:
- Much of the Technical Guides (inc the checklist) and Accessory fitments are free
- Owners Manuals are around $5 (US) (but can also be found for free, with some sleuthing, on the official Jaguar Website)
- Workshop Manuals are around $15
- there might be some TSBs and 'Service recommendations' and Brochures, depending on the model and year, for nominal amounts

Basically, you create an account, then add stuff to your shopping cart - even the free stuff. Once you checkout (and you don't have to pay if its all free...) they send you a link to download the documents. Worked pretty well....

I downloaded everything I could find for the X150 (2007 - 2009) models, and I recommend doing the same for your car.
I don't have anything for the X100, and wouldn't want to attach them here if I did, because I don't want to undercut them.
They do provide a valuable service for us - I paid $160 (I think) for a 5-volume printed XJ-S Workshop Manual in 1998 !!!

Let me know if there's a problem downloading stuff for your car, and I'll try to help.
If it works for you, would you consider passing the word in the XK8/XKR Forum ??
And to clarify: I'm not associated with Jag Docs - I'm just a happy user...

Jeremy

Jeremy
Thank you for the link and info.
I went there and signed up, unfortunately, I used up 2 of my 8 attempts and getting the page: IE cannot display this page.
There may be a technical issue with it and I will try later using a different browser.

Looking around, this looks like a very informative site and I appreciate you pointing it out.
Cheers
Brian

Agreed. Download to the computer in minutes for just a few bucks. Store a spare copy on a flash drive to keep in the glove box.

I'm still trying to understand how you go from 30k mile service to 60k mile service? If anything, wouldn't the next logical step be 40k mile service? Since my daughter is in 4th grade I think i've got the basic understanding that 40 comes before 60.....seems very strange. I'd love to know the dealers logic on this. Even if it has been two years since your last service it doesn't make sense.

With their logic, given you haven't had it service for two years could void your warranty. Strange..

There's no mystery here. Jaguar scheduled servicing is carried out on a TIME or MILEAGE basis. That means every 10K miles OR every 12 Months - whichever comes sooner.

The OP's example of a 2007 with 34K Miles should have been serviced:

2008 : First Service - 10K Miles/12 Month Schedule
2009 : Second Service - 20K Miles/14 Month Schedule
2010 : Third Service - 30K Miles/36 Month Schedule
2011 : Fourth Service - 40K Miles/48 Month Schedule
2012 : Fifth Service - 50K Miles/60 Month Schedule
2013 : Sixth Service - 60K Miles/72 Month Schedule

A high miles 2007 vehicle with say 100K Miles would be on its Tenth Service.

Hi all!

Above is a link to a pdf file with the maintenance check sheet for XK MY 2009.

Is this sheet available also for my model year 2011? Where can it be found?

And what about the work shop manual? Where can it be obtained or purchased?

Thank you!
ter

Perhaps the service manager is suggesting a transmission fluid change on your ten year old XK. Yes, published service interval for transmissions is much longer, but there is a good argument for changing transmission fluid at ten years when mileage is quite low. My '07 has but 41K miles, and am changing transmission fluid this week.

A strange decision to resurrect a five year old thread to ask this question.

The 2010MY Maintenance Check Sheet applies:

The official WorkShop Manual is available through JLR TOPIx (chargeable by the hour, day or month). It is also available on DVD in PDF format from the usual suspects.
