Default Replacement touch screen

Good Morning Everyone,

After months of trying 'this and that' to rectify my non-illuminated and non-responsive touch screen I have finally solved the problem. I'll describe my symptoms and, if yours are similar, then this may work for you. When I bought the car the screen was blank - the last owner had been quoted £1,500 GBP by the main dealer to rectify the problem (new unit and fitting/programming). I am told that there is no longer stock of the head units in the Jaguar stores so that may no longer be an option anyway.
After a week or so of owning the car I discovered that the screen came on when it was dark outside - so my thoughts turned to the light sensor being at fault. I then turned the brightness to 'manual' and lowered it below fifty per cent. The next day the screen stayed on and all functions operated - YES !!! All remained 'tickety boo' until I took the car for its MOT (yearly test in the UK) and I think the tester must've messed about with the settings because when I got it back it had stopped working yet again. DAMN !!! Once again I tried the night-time setting but NOTHING. However, I did find that when I opened the drivers door the screen would illuminate with the large coloured letter 'R' four time and then went blank again. "The screen must be OK" I thought to myself otherwise it wouldn't illuminate when I opened the door ???
I did find that if I shone a bright LED lamp at the screen I could see the Home page and, when I turned the fan speed up/down it showed on the screen, as did the temperature scales.

I do have a spare laptop with the Jaguar SDD program so checked for codes etc. That showed a loss of comms between the Instrument Panel. That's fine BUT where where was the interruption ?? Having studied the touch-screen set-up I decided that the possible culprit may be the 'Information and Entertainment Module' (a programmable unit). I bought a used unit. I swapped the units over and tried to program same but to no avail as I didn't seem to have the software required to download.

I tested the MOST circuit (fibre optic) and that all checked out OK, so where now. I didn't want to spend hundreds on a secondhand screen unit if that didn't turn out to be the cause so my thoughts turned to alternatives, including waiting for some tech wizard to produce a compatible upgraded replacement (OR eventually replacing the entire centre console with a Tesla style one - once the apparent gremlins have been resolved). What about the screen fitted to the XF models - it looks the same size and the features look the same, albeit the part numbers are different AND, according to others on the forum, a replacement screen will need to be programmed. Used units from XF models (same age) can be bought on Ebay for less that £50 GBP so I thought it must be worth trying. I bought one for £16 GBP (inc delivery). Looking at the two units the only difference I could see (apart from the part number on a label) was the absence of a little lug on each side of the XK unit (used to fix it to the plastic front surround with self-tappers). The XF unit has an extra metal frame around the front edge which is held to the unit by four screws (the same holes are used to secure the XK unit to its chassis). I had nothing to lose so I connected the unit up (just three connectors) and turned the ignition on. SUCCESS - everything works perfectly (even the heated steering wheel, heated seats etc). What did surprise me was that when I open the door the letter 'R' also comes on - so I am presuming that the details that we see on the screen are stored in the aforementioned 'Information and Entertainment Module' NOT the touch-screen unit. Since then I've bought a couple of spare XF units (one at £10 GBP and the other at £15 GBP) JUST IN CASE !! There was no programming required - it really is 'Plug & Play'.

This may not be the answer to your particular screen problem but, at the current price of used XF units, it's got to be worth a try. (I'm no electronics expert so can accept no responsibilty if you try this solution and it doesn't work or, worse still, it creates further problems for you. It worked for me BUT it may not for you). Obviously it's important that the XF unit is of the same age because, for example, earlier units didn't have DAB radio.
Good luck !!

So your conclusion’s a faulty TSD? Mine never had a problem until I upgraded it with a new one, required when I did the OEM back up camera integration.

Same symptoms and diagnosis as yours. First time it happened was shortly after fitting, disabled auto brightness and that worked for a few years, then it happened again so dropped brightness below fifty percent and now all
is well so far.

Glad you got it sorted Captain Q. Emphasis on matching years is important. We did some work on this a few years back and I guinea pigged my 07. Tried swapping the 07 unit with a 2010 and it was a no go because the climate modules are different on the 2010 onward. Because of that, heating seats and heated steering did not work. So research is always in order...

Hi both,

Sean is quite correct - it's important to ensure that the unit is from the same era - luckily on the sticker to the rear is the date (in my case I found a July 2010 XF unit to fit my May 2010 XKR). The unit I used had a part number starting 9X23 - I believe the earlier XF versions (for cars without DAB radio etc) started with 8X23. The original unit for my XKR started 9W83 (so perhaps the 9 at the start denotes the same type ??). I believe there were three versions of the screen fitted to X150's - presumably the same three versions were fitted to the XF's (and, possibly, their appearance changed at the same time ??). If that is the case then I see no reason why owners of later X150's cannot also use an XF unit. Good luck everyone & take care.

Smile Good News?

I think your thread has good news for me, because I am having trouble with the touchscreen in my 2008 XK.

If I have followed correctly and can buy a screen from a 2008 XF X250 it should just plug into my car and work without reprogramming and, of course, assuming that there is nothing wrong with it.

And this be most likely to happen if I can find a screen dated with the same month in 2008 as my car was first registered?

Thanks for such a useful tip; if it works for me this would appear to be much the cheapest option available to me, and cheap enough to take a risk on.
John

Hi all,

Thank you Sean for posting the XK part numbers. Please bear in mind that the numbers on the rear of the XF parts will NOT be the same (as previously mentioned, the XF units have a small frame around the front of the screen which does NOT have the small lugs on either side (they are used on the XK units to attach the unit to the back of the front plastic surround with self-tapping screws (not necessary, as once fitted to the aluminium chassis the unit is very secure anyway). I cannot guarantee that this solution will work for everyone but it certainly did for me. Good luck.

Hi Keith
I was about halfway into your post and was going to pass on a tip from a expert that the XF screen is worth a try…. before realising it was you!

I’m absolutely delighted with the XK… posted a few photos here

Good Morning Chris,

Looks like you've been at the 'Meguiars' - car looks gorgeous !! Really pleased that the car has gone to someone who will appreciate and enjoy it. Welcome to the forum by the way - it's a fantastic source of advice (if ever needed) and full of people with a wealth of knowledge. Hope to see you at some of the Jaguar shows (next year probably). Regards Keith

Default Help with touch screen - NEWBIE

Hi All,

I'm new and really need your help and support.

I have purchased a used 2007 XKR for my father and yes the screen jut goes blank after a while.

I have managed to get the brightness down below 50% and turned off the auto dim feature. This does help somewhat but last for a few minuets and then the same problem, it goes off.

Now my father is not the most technical chap and this was a 65 birthday present for him. I dont want him to get turned off the car as it is absolutely beautiful and has full history with only 47k on the clock!

It is perfect in every way except this.

No being in the UK, you would have thought getting a replacement screen would be fairly straight forward...but NO!

XK screens are heard to find on ebay but I have heard that XF screens of the same year will work! There are a few for sale but how do I know which one will work with the XK?

Shall I simply just buy the same model year screen from an XF and hope for the best? Shall I try and pull the old screen out first?

Please help.
I want dad to be 100% happy with his birthday present.

Hi @Iceboy . It doesn't quite work that way I don't think. Maybe someone else can chime in but to my knowledge there isn't a direct swap with an XK without applying a software update. While you can swap from an 09 XF, the heat controls probably will not work as the XF used a different Climate Control Module than the XK. Also the seat heaters and steering wheel heater will not work. It will all look the same but without climate functions, it will be a bust.

I think the matching like to like years between models might work for the later years as noted above by Captain Q but the earliest XF I've seen parts for is an 09 - Part# is 8X2310E889AC. You can try it but I think you'll find it to be a problem for your 07.

The alternative would be to follow the advice of @WhiteXKR here:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/report.php?p=2069513

fwiw, the part number for your year is 6W8310E889AD
note the difference in the beginning as XF starts with 8W and XK begins with 6W. That's usually a sign that there was a software change
