Sat Nav - GPS
Hi
I've had a problem with my 2011 XKR in that the Sat Nav is no longer able to pick up a GPS signal, this isn't a major problem for me, but it would be nice to have it working again, mainly because although my wife likes reading maps, she doesn't know her left from her right!
The GPS icon on the top left hand corner of the Navigation screen has a red line through it.
I can still use the Sat Nav as long as I periodically recalibrate it and hope it sticks to the route by letting it calculate its position via the distance travelled, speed and turns made, however, ultimately, it will get lost and the cursor will eventually end up in the sea.
The car was bought as Jaguar Approved Used and still has an extended warranty on it, so I've had a dealer look at it.... I'm not going to go into details, but I'm glad a I know a decent independent jag shop.
Yesterday the dealer got around to replacing the gps antenna.
They've told me that it hasn't solved the problem and that they suspect there is a short somewhere, that finding and fixing will involve removing the seats and carpet and the work will not be covered by the extended warranty. I declined their offer.
I guess my question, or questions, are; Does the gps antenna wire into the Nav unit in the boot, and if so, wouldn't the short be between the gps antenna in the spoiler and the unit in the boot? Hence finding the short shouldn't require ripping the cabin apart? Or could the culprit indeed be between the Nav unit in the boot and the console in the dash and the dealer does present a valid case?
If it means having to pay to have the seats removed and carpet pulled up etc, I think I'll get myself one of the new Garmin Nuvi's.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi
I've been meaning to update my own post regarding this problem... apologies.
.
Was told by the dealer that replacing the antenna hadn't made any difference and there must be a short and if I wanted to pay for the privilege they could try and find it by removing the seats and carpet. I declined their offer and started looking into buying an aftermarket satnav.
On the odd occasion over the following few days I started up the Navigation and no GPS signal.
On a drive home from work a week or so later, sitting in traffic, I decided to have a look at the Navigation to see where it had wandered off to, and guess what.... GPS is receiving a signal and has been ever since... I can only guess that the antenna replacement has fixed the problem and that it took a while for it warm up!
I read on other forums that a new antenna will cost about £70 and it quite easy to replace by removing the boot lid lining and undoing the 3 bolts that hold the spoiler in place.

That is up there with the worst dealership service I have ever heard. I would really recommend giving another dealer a chance to fix your problem. If the part that is broken is covered under warranty then it doesn't matter what they have to remove to fix it. It's good to know that the problem has went away but I would still speak to an honest dealer about it.
