Should I buy a 2010 XK that had engine replaced due to overheating?
I forgot to add this lst nite. Every engine that is out of the crate and dropped in a different car must come with an MSO..
Manufacturers Statement of Origin.
WHoever bought the engine has the MSO and was given to the dealer. If you ask for a copy, the dealer is obligateedt to give it to you.
If no MSo then it isnt a new engine, out of the crate

I don't know if you are aware but the first six digits of the engine number are the build date so in your case it is 4th Dec 2009.
The build date of the car with the VIN you mentioned is 16th Dec 2009 so it wouldn't surprise me if it was the original engine, rebuilt but a dealer will tell you for sure.
Wow - thanks for all of this knowledge; a relatively unusual situation here - or common but not a lot of info about this type of situation on the net for this engine . . hope it helps others in the future.
Update --- I bought the vehicle yesterday.
Spoiler alert - anyone who thinks I'm crazy and this is a bad idea will see below that my slant on the data supports my purchase for me, at least:
Before I did, I had the service department that the vehicle was purchased from print up all ROs (repair orders for any newbs reading this in the future, lol) -- and I pored through them. Some issues with battery/replacement, some with TPMS sensors randomly coming on, some with the usual flat tire here and there, brakes redone in the past 4 months, one issue of the car stalling on a right turn, but not replicated by dealer, regular oil changes, and an ECU update. I think there were a couple of TSBs done, as well - all up to date.
To get the details on the engine REPLACEMENT, since it was done under warrany, I had them look into the DDW (direct dealer warranty) for the vehicle which shows all claims, parts, work. This is where I learned that the owner reported that the car overheated, smoke from under hood and had it towed to dealer. Dealer saw that coolant pump separated and they replaced/reconnected. Compression test done and all cylinders were in the 140-190 range, but not within 10% of each other (normative spec), so replacement parts ordered.
Among the replacement parts:
AJ8-12861 (engine)
C2P-12808 (serpentine belt)
JLM-20972/3 (coolant)
C2Z-18658 (engine oil cooler line hose)
C2P-17825 (o-ring)
C2P-17823 (o-ring)
C2S-5677 (ring sealing)
KSR-107002 (o-ring_
C2P-10363 (transmission fluid)
JLM-20972/3 (coolant - 5 of these)
AJ8-11612 (engine water pump gasket)
C2P-12405 (hose)
The Jaguar 800 number was not able to tell me if the engine was original or not (they only had the current ID - perhaps another rep would know more) --- but they did tell me that in most cases that a remanufactured Jaguar engine would be sent for drop-in replacement versus a brand new engine or an on-site rebuild. The service manager at the dealership mentioned that this is how it usually happens, as well, but includes the full engine, including headers, etc.
Do I care if remanufactured or new? I mean, I am sure I'd prefer new, but if remanufactured to Jaguar spec and dropped in --- I'm good with that. I test drove a 2011 XK convertible they had with 50k immediately before I test drove mine - and there was a difference in the engine --- the replacement engine on my 2010 was silky smooth, not as frenetic (subjective) as the 2011 - same amount of power. I put the car I was buying through its paces, though I didn't clobber it since less than 500 miles since replacement engine. It held up well. I got the vehicle for 10% below average CPO value.
Then - I drove it home 6.5 hours from DC to Cleveland. No issues with engine, averaged 23.8mpg (I think that will get higher after break in). I had the TPMS sensors come on a couple of times - will get that checked out, and I couldn't find the perfect seat settings to keep me comfortable for that length of time, but will work on it!
I've got 8k and 2 months left on OEM warranty, and 50k and 2 years on CPO after that.
Finally, if this works out -- or even crashes and burns and did not work out - I will post so at least we have a detailed set of data points/great discussion on here. Let me know if any questions.
I will post pics soon!

I am experiencing the same problem on 2009 XKR. The TPMS are new and were pre-calibrated to match the Jaguar in car computer sensors. When the new tires were mounted the sensors calibrated immediately. Now every once in a while I get the TIRE warning light....then it will go out for a few days...then back on. Sounds like you may from be experiencing the same symptons.
Sure would help if you find a resolve to your TPMS problem, you can advise us of any fix. I sure would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
sanjay_cool,
Congratulations! I'm sure you'll have no more problems than the usual Jaguar electrical gremlins that every Jag owner experiences from time to time. Your warranties will protect you, and you should have thousands of miles of joy.
I can't wait to pick up mine, which will be on Monday. Then it goes straight into the shop for modifications.
Good luck.

When the engine was replaced in my 2000 XJR; I went back into the service department to get somethings out of the car.
Lined up on the wall opposite my car were a bunch of large crates that looked like they would hold engines. I asked the Service Manager what was in the crates. He replied that they were engines with the faulty coatings that had been replaced and were being shipped back to Jaguar in the UK. My guess is that Jaguar rebuilt these engines with the new piston and cylinder coatings applied.
Granted this was in the spring of 03, but it is indicative of what Jaguar might do when an engine needs replacement under warranty.
