Hey guys I’m New to world of xkrs , I have noticed when I drive the car hard, I can smell what can be described like a burning type smell which is clearly exhaust gases or something there is no fire anywhere

any ideas ? I have googled and read some comments. It just wanted to ask

Sorry Google tells me it hit 40c in Dubai today, which is pretty toasty and we never see anything like that here in blighty.

Your cats are just running hotter than most, if it smells eggy then your cats are on their way out, if just fuel then check your trims.

 

I noticed this too, after a nice 120mph burst or so. Never thought too much of it. Probably just stuff getting hotter at higher rpms.

 

Now I have time to think it could be the clutch or gear box trying to catch up when you floor the pedal real hard , I have smelt that a few times from mine and I know the smell a clutch gives of when it's on the way out , on vans we owned , Have also smelt the same coming from a ftype R 5l when in a pretend race it was in front of me and ponged of clutch

 

I have had my XKR over 130 once and well over 100 many times, No odd smells at all. I ran an SCCA time trials at a track North of Dallas and no odd smells there either.

 

I tell my grandkids that I ran over a skunk.

 

Yeah I’m sure it’s a normal , just comes into the cabin when driving. It’s not eggy so wouldn’t think it’s the cats. It’s hot here Easily over 45 degree c but I’m not ringing it’s neck in that heat mostly nigh driving.

I was going to just check the egr valve and stuff, there’s no oil leaks any where in the car, gearbox doesn’t slip so can’t see it being the clutches in the box, maybe i should do a gearbox oil change although the dealer tells me it’s sealed for life - who knows who to believe

just coming from a z06 And my other car is a raptor I would have thought the build quality would have been better in the jag 😂 clearly not, neither of those smell when u give them beans!

Yeah I’ll change it , it’s just amazing what some dealers tell you.

 

make sure you using fuel treatments cause mine in the shop right now from the fuel injectors going bad.Your Jaguar is spraying extra gas when you open it up and it's not successfully burning all the fuel that it should and it's leaving a lot of residue behind probably causing what that smell is

Update: i was doing research about my own problem with my car and I came across THIS...PLEASE READ!I hope this can save your beautiful XKR before it's too late.I hope this is able to help solve your problem if my other answer was pretty vague.It's something about a knock sensor replacement

 

I have logged the car , there isn’t any knock or fault codes linked to knock sensors

 

Personally I think this knock sensor replacement is a load of bulshit just saying not meaning to offence , They all have a smell if you drive them pretty hard

 

Yeah I think so to , tbh it’s done 100k miles and o have been giving it some occasional stick in 45 degree heat today / this week and it’s fine

if something was up it would have shown by now. No codes I’m logging it on an app and it seems fine. Seems to burn a a bit of oil but most cars do when u drive them a bit hard

 

All sorts of stuff splatters onto your catalytic converters, which operate at 800°F. Push your XKR and they can get hotter. That's hot enough to vaporize whatever is on your cats and smell bad.

 

In that kind of heat I would check the coolant and oil levels weekly at least other wise enjoy the car

 

:-) I have learned there's the aroma of 'you had fun' and the special aroma of 'you had a lot of fun' and the very special aroma of 'time to replace those cats, after far too much fun' -> strangely sometimes coincides with the need of new rear tires. .

 

that seems legit since he's not having any faults happen afterward.I Say check it out with an OBD2 scanner and see what it says just to be on the safe side
