thinking of buying 2010 XK
Hello all,
I'm pretty new to Jaguar, and new to the post.
I'm thinking of buying a 2010 XK with about 50K miles. It looks and drives great.
Any thoughts, suggestions about what should I look for, and if this year was a decent year for Jaguar would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Service history is most important.
Gearbox (ZF 6HP26/28) should be serviced with new pan and fluid, if not already done.
Check suspension bushes and ball joints for wear
Check dash cover for lifting
Check for any rattling sound from engine at cold start
Check for coolant to be correct type and level as water pumps have been a failure point on the 5.0 litre cars

Check the oil level. Since there is no dipstick and it has to be checked electronically, many owner don't bother. If it's low, I'd be wary unless you have a fairly extensive service history showing regular owl change intervals. Otherwise, it's a great car. Check water pump for leaks.
Thank you for the great info.
Service history is pretty good. Current owner seems like he really took care of it.
Carfax shows that the water pump was replaced early in it's life.
I'm just a bit nervous about the stories you hear about them being a money pit.
Planning on keeping it into retirement, but without being bankrupt.
Any recommendations on good, honest, affordable mechanics in Los Angeles?
Again,
Thank you.

Overall, you will find most Jaguar stories pretty much lingering from the early years of Lucas Electronics. Since Ford bought them in early 2000's they upgraded to the Ford system (we joke that it is a basic Ford Topaz electronics, because the car is, electronically speaking 5 years behind even the budget manufacturers.)
That said, the electronics although basic, are very reliable.
The older 4.2L engines are refined and bulletproof. The 5.0l, not so much. Loose the water pump and not notice.... Replace the motor..... Experience timing chain tensioner failure (google it).... replace motor...
For either generation, do not expect to customize the car without the deepest of pockets. What you buy is what you get. The sound system in not easily upgradable, as the cars functions are integrated to it
The cars was sold in such limited numbers that aftermarket support is minimal, and Jaguar, even with asking $600 for a $50 part, is slowly shutting down parts production for anything over 7 years old, and we are already seeing things no longer available from them.... Hunting for junk yard Jags is no easy task, but folks here are a real big help.
I have an 07 XK, and a 2010 XKR. and I am parting with the XKR both for financial reasons and the fact the 5.0l engine has a timing chain design flaw that at minimum cost $2000 to fix before failure, to new motor ($10000+) after failure. I really cant afford either right now.... I get to fall back to the trusty XK, so horsepower is about the only real loss for me...
I love the XKs, and once you step into one, you will wonder why you drove plastic things before, but if you want to hedge your bet on the motor stick with a 4.2l, as it was in production for nearly 2 decades, and well sorted before 2007. The early 5.0l are to be watched with raised eyebrow.

My 2010 XKR.... 68,000 miles, and have only had one fuel injector go bad. Nothing else. Original water pump and it is still leak and vibration free. Granted, it did cost me $2000 to get the injectors replaces, but for having it for over..... Six??? years now it still is the best car I've owned.
Plus, those 500+ horses really are fun!

Every car is at risk of mechanical and electronic breakdown, and that risk increases with age and mileage. Rubber suspension parts and engine hoses dry out and crack, and fluids need to be replaced. It is crucial to use only the proper spec motor oil in the 5.0L engine - the proper viscosity is not the only spec - and to change the oil and filter earlier than specified in the Owner's Handbook, namely not later than every 12 months or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first. Oil is cheaper than engines.
Another known flaw is the leather dashboard, which can bubble up and separate from the backing.
I recommend that you pay a Jaguar dealer for a PPI using the CPO checklist. That way you'll know what needs to be fixed and the cost, which you can use to negotiate a lower price.
This Forum is a wealth of knowledge and members are very helpful. Learn to use the Advanced Search function. It's intuitive and easy, but it takes a little time to master.
Good luck with your quest! Find a nice one; you won't regret it.

Pre inspection is always worth the dollar/peace of mind quotient.
i wouldn't hesitate to buy that 5.0L if it passes a PPI to your satisfaction. It's 10 years old with low mileage and probably is a good value. You may prefer the new design LED taillights with two backup lights; the original version on the 4.2L models have only one reverse light. The normally aspirated 5.0L with 380HP Is almost as quick as the 4.2L XKR with 420HP.
