Default TPMS _ A funny Thing

I’m still getting accustomed to my new (to me) 2008 XK Covert.

I fitted new tires, rotors, disc, pads to it upon delivery several months ago.

It has the 20” Sentra wheels. The other day I got a low tire pressure warning for the right side. I was next to a gasoline station when this occurred so I pulled in and put air into both right side tires since I hadn’t paid close enough attention to which tire was actually low and they both looked a bit low. The air hose had no pressure reading apparatus, I had no gauge and there was no attendant on duty. I put in a bit, both front and rear and went on my way. Several miles later I got another low pressure warning, this time both left tires were flashing one and then the other.

I went home and checked the pressures (the following morning). I had over filled the right side, front had 38 rear had 40. The left side had 30 front and 32 rear.

I put the fronts at 33 and rears at 35 and after a little over 50 miles I haven’t seen any more warnings.

I thought the tpms was based on an actual pressure, not a ratio of the highest to the lowest.

I put new TPMS on all 4 wheels last summer, read the manual and did what it said to reset them, didn't work, back to the tire store, they told me something different from the manual, didn't work either. Back I went, the changed out what they had just put in with another mf'g TPMS, same thing.
Came on here and took the advise given, over inflated them about 4 lb's more than than listed, took it on a 100 mile trip at constant speeds and bingo, no warning lights for the rest of the summer.
Fall came, temps dropped into the 50's and the damn warning came back, this was just before I put it to bed for 5 months, I'll blame the temp. drop and wait and see what spring temps bring.
It's the only thing that's wrong with my 2010 XK, some say just ignore it, but I just can't stand to see that warning on my dash.

You mentioned disabling TPMS (MY HERO!) in SDD - what is SDD? You mentioned a 'mod' so please give me the scoop. Not a fan of TMPS false alerts over the years on any of the vehicles I have owned. Planned on buying a set of wheels and tires for summer (Ohio - USA) and not having to fork out for TPMS will save me some $USD! Thanks!

SDD is JLR's dealer level technician software. It has a very steep learning curve, little documentation and a user interface that appears to have been designed with a punchcard deck. Many hours need to be invested to figure it out. Does a lot of really interesting stuff, though. That said, the best way to do it is find a jag indy mechanic and pay them to delete TPMS from your Car Configuration File. And get a nice dial gauge for tire pressure.

Just a couple things to think about. You need "modified" SDD Software to disable TPMS. It is illegal to do it in the US and unless the Indy mechanic has a hacked version of the software, the option in the car configuration file will be grayed out and unchangeable. Maybe it can be done in engineering mode, I'm not sure.

To do it yourself requires said software, a VCM interface, some time to learn SDD and when all is said and done at a cost of about $600? Maybe more.

SDD has great value for a DIY'er but unless you use it for repairs....
