Default Transmission Fluid Leak

Hi All,

i just got got back from being away for a week, having left my 2007 XKR parked in the garage, only to find a pool of transmission fluid under the car and pooling out on the concrete out the side of the car. Just wondering if this is common and where it may be coming from, as I did have my transmission fluid replaced some 5,000km ago and had no issues with leaks as it was being driven regularly.
Leaking transmission fluid was not uncommon on my XJ6 with the BW65 transmission after it had been sitting dormant for a week or more, but I would not have expected this with the ZF trans.
Any thoughts?

Cheers;

I would verify it's trans fluid first. Where exactly is it coming from? What is the color? What does it smell like? A picture would say a lot.

They are known to leak from the electrical connector sleeve and if you changed the fluid but left the original sleeve, it may be that. I find it hard to believe it would be leaking that much though.

I had a leak that looked like it was coming from the trans, turns out it was oil pooling up in the S/C outlet pipe, and after sitting for a while, it dripped down the engine valley down onto the transmission, making it look like a trans leak.

If by the trans, its mtl a pan, if by the radiator, then the rubber portion of the cooler lines.

Definitely trans fluid at the rear of the transmission.

Mine took 9-1/2 liters, not overnight, just a pan/sleeve swap.

Glad you found it.

My question is ... can the sleeve be replaced on its own without having to drain the fluid?? hmmmm...

I'm in the same situation and don't want to drain and refill again just for the sleeve. I just monitor my leak and clean it up every now and then. Its at a few drops per month so I can wait till next year to consider another fluid change.

It's a plastic transmission pan. Mine was cracked & weaping at 20k miles. It needed to be replaced. Did the whole trans service.

You need to drain it and open the pan cover as there is a lever you need to pull in order to release the sleeve

Sorry to say the pan does need to come off, and that is a single use item, so new pan and oil required. But it is important that it be attended to ASAP, as there is the risk that the oil will seep its way up the wiring harness and create extra electrical grief over time.

Cheers;
