One of the issues of comparing the indy rate to the main dealer rate is that the main dealers are disappearing....

Pretty much a Jaguar only shop. Took my Xkr to them recently and was impressed with their knowledge and ability to diagnose items. Mostly all Jag. Not a fancy place, but old school with a lot of experience. Cincy/N Ky area. https://www.dallas-auto.com/

When we lived in Los Angeles, we took our JLR products to Yorks and Lancs in Chatsworth. Not only were they knowledgeable, they are very fair in their pricing. Sometimes they would just print out the WSM pages and let me fix it myself because they know I liked to work on my own cars.

Not my experience. Dealerships see a lot of cars under warranty. So they are newer cars without much wrong. Most of their work is maintenance. I’ve found good indie shops see a lot of older cars, the mechanics generally have experience with older cars, like mine. And the cost, I’ve never seen or heard of an indie shop that cost more or even the same as dealerships. These are generalities of course. There are exceptions. For me tho, I’d never take my 10 year old XKR to a Jaguar Dealer.

I think also from what I've seen is there is a lot of turnover at the dealers these days. Thus, many mechanics only have experience on the newer cars given their age and time in the business. That's a big, big issue.
