Default Vehicle Trackers

My insurance company insists that I fit a tracker to my 2007 XKR Convertible. Does any one have one fitted, if so, what make. Are they a 'do it yourself' job or something for a specialist? I keep reading about battery life problems, will fitting one of these make it worse? Any comments / experiences gratefully received.

What is the tracker for??? Are they used to find the car if stolen??? Do it save you money or something?

I always get a chuckle when an Onstar client rudely discovers that they can shut his/her vehicle down whenever they want to...and many more things they can do as well. They don't think about that part of the deal...

My insurance company didn't care if it had a Tracker or not and wouldn't lower the premium if it did (it does, but no current subscription) so I couldn't see the point

I don't think they will lower the premium but insist on the tracker or they will not cover the car for theft.
The rest of the policy is in place without the tracker.

Sorry, but i do not understand this -

What or who is 'Onstar'?

"OnStar provides subscription-based communications, in-vehicle security, hands-free calling, turn-by-turn navigation and remote diagnostics systems throughout the United States, Canada and China"

I'm UK based so 'Onstar' is 'offstar' as far as my location is concerned.

So..... where does that leave me with regards to advice?
Can any one offer any?

Mine came with a Tracker already fitted, but expired subscription.
I did have the info though & informed Tracker of the change of ownership but like I said, my insurance company didn't seem to care if it had one and even said that most others don't either.

If you need one for the insurance company I presume it would have to be an approved, professionally installed one rather than a DIY jobby.
The insurance company would probably have a list of approved ones like they do for immobilisers.

Or you could try another company.

I use these guys for my commercial trucks. Very inexpensive and very reliable:
Virtual Fleet Supervisor

There's another company that sells exactly the same tracker for $300 with a contract. These guys are $99 and no contract.
