The correct bulb carries a JLR part number of XR855036, which is 65w.

Unfortunately, those won't work for the OP, they are only for an XK, not an XKR:

Suitable for Jaguar XK models from 2006 - 2010. Not suitable for XKR models.

Powerhouse, the service manual shows the bulb is an H3 Halogen. NBCat didn't say what type of bulb it is, he provided the Jaguar p/n in case you wanted to get the replacement from Jag. As for being 65w, I can't say I've ever seen an H3 other that 55w and 100w. I would recommend you pull the bulb out to be sure it isn't special to Jaguar.

Anyone any thoughts on the main bulb which is a D1S35W, is there a more modern versions of this bulb, although the light it puts out is quite good. Is there a better upgrade version that has better light and more modern color. Has anyone changed theirs.

I don't think you will be able to get away from the D1S due to the mount but there are many of them on ebay in various color temps from the original 4300K through 12,000K. Mostly knock offs, very few Osram or Phillips bulbs.
