What do you use as an engine oil filter? Any filters you would stay away from? Should OEM be used all the time?

 

Stay away from the no name Fleabay specials and instead buy brand names such as Mann, Mahle, Wix and AC Delco, or OEM.
Plenty of choices at Rock Auto going cheap(ish), I have bought all of the above mentioned brands from them over the years and never had a problem.
I just get whatever of these brand names is going cheapest at the time.

 

There are differences in construction between different oil filter brands, but how significant those differences are and whether they're worth the additional cost is up to you. Watch this comparison test from a year ago:

 

I bought AC Delco from Rock Auto--- $63.10 Can for 4 filters delivered in 2 days. I do use genuine Jaguar filters on my VDP mostly because I got a good deal from a Jaguar dealer by bulk purchase for my self and a friend.

 

I use the Mahle OX 774D and haven't had a problem. It's a high quality filter.

I believe it is somewhat less important with the 5.0 and 3.0 motors using cartridge style filters however I have never deviated from genuine Jaguar as I find there to be no cost savings with the alternatives.

 

I only use wix, mobil one, and the mopar filters. But I did take apart and STP extended life filter and found it to be high quality. Practically a wix

 

Not all non-OEM parts are equal. I've read a thread about a member replacing the water pump with an AC Delco brand which caused over heating. I don't remember the thread, but was surprised the non-OEM water pump performed so bad. As a result I will only use a Jaguar OEM water pump to replace my water pump when the time comes. AC Delco makes oil filters; should I trust them? I certainly don't want to starve my engine of proper oil circulation, especially on start up.

Stuart perhaps the question should have been why use anything but OEM?

 

It is also possible the failure had nothing to do with the brand. I’ve been running a Beck Arnley pump for over 6 months with no issues. Saved several hundred dollars over OEM. Couldn’t see any difference side by side other than the original had a failed bearing and the pulley was completely loose.

 

I suspect the reason is lower cost except, of course, for any filter made by K&N which will last forever, give you 50 more HP, and protect your car from the zombie apocalypse!

Similarly, why buy the Jaguar-branded battery maintainer sold as an official Jaguar accessory by your dealer's parts department? Except for the logo, it''s identical to the CTEK 3300 sold on Amazon for less. If it costs more, it must be better. Right?

Apologies, apparently my dry humour was lost. Regardless, I pay less than $20 for OEM filters. If we were saving hundreds of dollars I’d understand. And obviously Jaguar doesn’t manufacture car parts, most Marques don’t. Isn’t that a given?

 

I k ow what you mean about he K&N filter! I put one in my 2013 ford fiesta back int he day and when I can back the next day a brand new ferrari was there instead! It was incredible!


But seriously though, I use the Mahle.i buy the oil change kits from Blau auto parts, simple, easy, good oil good price mahle comes with it

 

I just shove a big wad of paper towels into the canister and call it good.

 

Dunno, my dad used to use a roll of toilet paper in his old farm tractor, gave it to my cousin years ago, and it’s still running. That thing is creeping up on 100 years old by now, so TP gets my vote.

 

My recommendation is to change it every time you change the oil.
