Use a smart phone with the Torque app to communicate with the PCM via the OBD port with a Bluetooth interface to read the STFTs and LTFTs. The noise seems to be coming from the inlet/induction system.

If the fuel trims are high, there may be a vacuum leak associated with the noise.

Do as mentioned and remove the belt and see if you have any wobble in the water pump pulley. My pump just failed and was very wobbly.

its meant to back to.the garage to get the water pump done but I am really reluctant to let them loose with it again. I have Friday off and the weekend... I might just go at this myself.

It's a very simple job on the 4.2. I'd much rather do it myself than pay to have it done.

I feel for your paint mark problem. Don't kill anybody.

I had a DeTomaso Longchamp painted. First windshield and rear window out. Then paint. Back to the window guy, windows in. The day after, when assembling, I noticed small marks on rear lid, white, meaning deep. Found more on the roof, front and back. Short story, the young guys working there installing the glass, had placed their tools on the roof and rear lid and front hood without any protection! A full respray at the expense of the window company, and no more work for that company. The level of stupidity is amazing.

Hop your's buffs out.

Took my car to a garage that I've used in the past and they seem to think it's the water pump? I'm sceptical as I would have thought it would be progressive.?

To top it off... I walked the shop manager round the car and pointed out the tree marks Mark's on the paintwork... I did that because I was paranoid that they wouldn't use protection on the wings when working on the car...

Low and behold!!!!

Totally visible totally in my face!!!! I'm gutted as I'm so very careful with my car! It's meant to be going in for detailling and a ceramic coating on Monday but now I might need to get the wing painted!

And I'm not even convinced I have a water pump issue...
I'd be bullshit mad too! Demand they fix the cosmetic damage and pay for it!

I've had scratches like that of my car. Maybe even worse. My body shop has taken care of all of them. As long as it's not through the clear coat all the way, they can blend stuff and work miracles. Since you're going to have it ceramic coated, I'm sure you're having a color correction done before that. They can do even more amazing things than the body shop I use. Good luck with that. Should be okay.

Get a length of heater hose or similar, use it like a stethoscope to isolate the noise, sounds a little hokey but I've done many times to at the very least narrow down the area

Could be the idler pulley bearing. Had mine go and thought screeching was either the water pump or power steering pump. Carefully used a very long screwdriver as a stethoscope and soon eliminated the usual suspects and identified the idler pulley as cause of whining noise.

Some time ago I had a rattling noise at the front, after replacing the water pump discovered the 3 bolts holding the pulley on were loose! Problem fixed.

Try checking the alternator. you may even spray a small amount of WD4o on bearing if you can aim toward it.

Take of the serpentine belt and start it up. You will see!

The rubber hose/screwdriver to the ear ideas are all good, or you can get an okay stethoscope at Harbor Freight for about $5 too. In any case you need something like those to narrow down the location. I've seen several good suggestions so far, have you looked into the supercharger at all? Could it be a bearing going in there? 7 second recording didn't reveal much.

Default Harmonic Balancer

Howdy. My '88 XJ6 recently began making noise when cold which went away when warm. I suspected a pump or bad belt. I took to shop and the Mechanic (trusted) suspected the harmonic balancer - a new term to me, I think most would call it a crank pulley. He said that was it, repaired it (new are ~$1k so he was able to make some type of weld fix. Problem solved. May not be your issue but good luck.

My water pump recently failed. In case it helps this link topic, here is a quick description. My car is 2007 XKR with 64,000 miles.

On each cold start I recently noticed a clicking noise lasting about 4 minutes. Then the noise disappeared. Very little change in pitch as the engine reved. At night a small puddle started to show beneath the engine. Red & sticky fluid. Interestingly, it was difficult to diagnose as coolant but that is what it was. New water pump installed cost $2,300. Changed thermostat, temperature sensor, radiator hose and 2 belts while opening up the engine area for the water pump. Costly one-use bolts for the water pump --- $30 each for total $150 for those 5 bolts. Of this total, labor was $700.

So I've been driving the car today loads and not a out of the ordinary sound or squeak out of her! No whirring no nothing! I have no idea what's going on with her but shes seems back to normal. Before I bought her two weeks ago she had been parked up for a few months...

Anyway... I've dropped in to a specialist and he will take a look at her next week... I'm not going back to.the other crowd.

On a good note... Tbe detailers have stated that they're 90% confident they can lose the bad scratch. They've orders a touch up kit also but he was confident that he can fix it... Its going in on Monday for the works so fingers crossed...

Red sticky fluid sounds like a power steering system leak.
Whirring sound changing with engine revs might be air in the PS system going through the PS pump. It is an issue of "while-I-am-in-there", replace the Water pump and all the idler's. I rebuild my idler pulleys with new bearings, bearing are about $4.00 each a my local bearing supply, e-z press out and in, and replace the pulley mounting bolts / housing threads that self destructs when you remove them.
