Default Whirring Noise?????

Got out of the car last night and she was fine... Started the car this morning and a loud whirring noise came from the front end of the engine...

Took my car to a garage that I've used in the past and they seem to think it's the water pump? I'm sceptical as I would have thought it would be progressive.?

To top it off... I walked the shop manager round the car and pointed out the tree marks Mark's on the paintwork... I did that because I was paranoid that they wouldn't use protection on the wings when working on the car...

Low and behold!!!!

Totally visible totally in my face!!!! I'm gutted as I'm so very careful with my car! It's meant to be going in for detailling and a ceramic coating on Monday but now I might need to get the wing painted!

And I'm not even convinced I have a water pump issue...

How was the diagnosis made to determine the cause of the noise is the water pump?

What is the MY of the vehicle and how many kilometres/miles has it been driven?

It's a 2007 of the 2007 to 2009 version of the car and shes done 96000 miles. They took off the ancillary and the noise stopped. Not sure how they've determined it's the pump but I would have thought there would be tell tale signs from the hole that normally weaps if there is a bearing problem...

Once the serpentine belt is removed, one can use the water pump pulley to determine if the bearing is worn.

Hopefully they inspected the power steering pump and other accessories driven by the serpentine belt as well.

From the pic that looks like it can be buffed out, easily. It’s just a scratch on the clear coat.

God I.hope you are right... I'm taking it to the detailling guys in the morning so.that they can take a look. It's meant to be going to them on Monday anyway so they said to drop by, take so that they can take a look and see if they can sort next week. If not then its paint work...

How long should a water pump last?

About the noise.
it could be the pump. It could also be a tensioner. I haven’t seen the car.
My car’s water pump is original. 🤞.

was this noise persistent, or did it go away after a while?

and did the noise begin instantly with the engine turning over, or did it not start until a few seconds after the engine turned over?

140000 Kms

the s-type r has 260,000 ;-)

but I believe in pre-emptive and thorough maintenance.

This morning as I started the car... The car has no issues staring, even this morning. Its constant and follows the revs... The faster you go the higher the pitch.

I've just nipped to.the garage there now and when I started the car, little to no noise to the point where I'm thinking that it's a normal sounding engine but cant be sure now. BUT hoofed it up the road coming back and the noise was back as loud as it was this morning... As I was parking the car... The noise went quieter and quieter to the point where the engine is again back to normal if not normal! So I didnt bother parking it and took it for another spin... No noise!

I seriously doubt this is the water pump... To me, having owned many cars and done most of my own work on cars, it sounds like steering pump low on fluid. But it's not and the steering is perfect...

Could it be something to do with the SC? It's not down on power... But the noise returned after I put the foot down. No noise the second time I took it out though...

Sorry buddy, I can’t go by the sound alone. I would need to take off the belts and check each component as @NBCat suggests.
incidentally, When I was a kid and playing with cars I made the mistake of reusing a belt on the 1.6 l overhead cam fiat engine... let’s just say I will never make that mistake again. Mind you, I learned a lot when my father helped me to rebuild that engine.... now I change my belts and check all pulleys more frequently than any service guide.
ditto for all the fluids,
ditto for all the filters,
ditto for ...

I've only just got the car and in truth, I normally do all my own work also. I just didnt have time this week so I thought I'd use the garage that I get the oil changes done as that's the only job I dont do as it's really hard to get rid of waste oils over here. I seriously wish I didnt bother... Not only do i believe this to be more power steering pump then water but for my trouble I've ended up with a scratched wing!

Cant trust anyone with your pride and joy!

don't recognize the sound. since it changes pitch with revs, i would suspect something in the drivetrain, on an aux belt, or a funny vacuum leak of some kind. i guess it could be a water pump bearing but i'd first want to rule out a potentially more expensive transmission issue.

did you also park it, put it in neutral, and rev the engine to rule out wheel/tire/hub/etc as the culprit?

it was stone cold this morning when the noise first started and then when the noise had disappeared, it came back when.the car was hot...

I'm going to recheck all fluid levels tomorrow...
