Got out of the car last night and she was fine... Started the car this morning and a loud whirring noise came from the front end of the engine...
Took my car to a garage that I've used in the past and they seem to think it's the water pump? I'm sceptical as I would have thought it would be progressive.?
To top it off... I walked the shop manager round the car and pointed out the tree marks Mark's on the paintwork... I did that because I was paranoid that they wouldn't use protection on the wings when working on the car...
Low and behold!!!!
Totally visible totally in my face!!!! I'm gutted as I'm so very careful with my car! It's meant to be going in for detailling and a ceramic coating on Monday but now I might need to get the wing painted!
And I'm not even convinced I have a water pump issue...
Had a similar situation with my 2007 xkr(55k mi). Started the car and there it was, a loud whirring noise. No previous sounds at all. Drove home 12mi thinking the worst. In my garage I tried to determine the source with no success. One day latter started car again to try again to trace the source and it was not there. No noise. Drove car for another~100 mi and noise started again. Again, in my garage, attempted to determine source using stethoscope. No luck. Removed acc. drive belt and noise went away. To me sounded just like power steering pump issue but all checked out ok. Had engine running looking for source and heard loud "pop" sound and "battery not charging" message appeared. I then determined total alternator failure. Replaced alternator and all is good. So this alternator, as it was failing, sounded just like I thought a broken vain in water pump, a bad belt tensioner, a failing power steering pump, a failing AC compressor, and a failing bearing in the supercharger would sound like. Playing with all the pully's by hand with the acc belt off did not indicate a bad alternator. After replacing the alternator I completely tore it apart. Bearings were good, one diode pack was burned out. So, a failing alternator, still partially charging the battery, made a moderately loud, rpm dependent whirring/vibration sound similar to other accessory unit failures until it completely failed with a loud pop and a battery not charging message. In short, my message to you is, check the alternator!
The same happened to me [Öld enough to vote"] (1999 S-Type 4.0L V8)174000Kms, and it was the Alternator (diode popped) also at the same time the Water Pump and the drive belt was replaced(just over $1600)Good luck with yours.Cheers
There is no lifetime prediction. At the mileage level a defective water pump would be in the range of normal wear and tear. When replacing the water pump, always replace the belt tensioner and the belt as well.
Get a 2nd opinion. I have a 2010 XK, and the water pump went out on the previous owner, while on the hwy., and he fried the engine, to the cost of $11,000 for a used one. I'm trying to find a temp. gauge that can be added. Don't trust idiot lights & can't understand why there isn't a set of gauges like my '65 E Type.
You can also use a smartphone with the Torque app to connect to the vehicle PCM through the OBD port via a Bluetooth interface to monitor coolant temperature and other functions.

good old fashioned large screwdriver where the shaft goes all the way through the handle place on the pump and listen all quiet all good growling or other noise then replace it.
2nd definitely the alternator know to blow on the jags
3rd jocky or tensioner wheel worth a good check
all the best
1. Buy a stethoscope! They're cheap and they answer a lot of questions quickly. It'll be obvious whether it's an idler pulley, water pump, or "none of the above".
2. Change your SC oil. Mine wasn't low on oil when I serviced it, yet the change in sound was nothing short of dramatic.
. My xk only had 45000 when the thermostat housing broke sending peace’s of plastic to the water pump. the impeller is made of plastic I didn’t see any leaking but I had my mechanic change the pump and housing and thermostat at the same time because the radiator fluid is $100.00 five quart it’s consecrated but I don’t have to worry about it and can just enjoy my ride.

5 quarts = 1 1/4 Gal I think
1 Gal = 4.5 Litres
so thats 1quart = 1.125 Litres = 1,125ml
if 5 quarts = $100 thats $20 a quart
$20 / 1125 = 0.01778 = 1ml
soooo
1000ml =1 ltr = $17.77
ahhhhhh thats better now its in English
and cheap compaired to OZ
phew still got it Dutchy
So this is seriously annoying guys! No noise at all since I first posted this thread! I hate this as I'm now in limbo as I've lost a little trust in the car.
For those who think the same as the garage, I really dont think it is... I'm fully aware of the Screwdriver trick and thanks to those suggesting that along with the other who suggested a stethoscope... But if the water pump was gone, I would expect a constant bearing noise along with loss of water. Tbe noise was more of a howling rather than a rumbling... Anyhoo... Not one peep from the car since!

One word... Bugger! 😊
ahhhh Gremlins that's it those little buggers sent here to drive you into a straight Jacket
chin up I would just motor on as it seems not to be a major engine breaker no bottom end stuff no chains its something that spins / turns fast so I say run it.
what do others thing cant just let her sit there!
no noise no fix

That's longer than I usually experience. The noises in my car disappear ONLY for the few minutes that the mechanic has his head under the hood. As I drive away, they magically reappear.

You should check the alternator.
I had a quite similar noise and after looooong investigation found the culprit
It was the alternator electronics which was partially working. I mean bearings were fine and charging was fine but after replacing it the noise disappeared for almost 2 years now.
I didnt think that I could the sound when I stuck my camera out of the window but I did... So here it is...
This is a very similar sound that I'm experiencing. My shop and I determined it is related to the A/C, since if you turn off the A/C, the whirring goes away. They replaced my compressor twice and it continues. I didn't experience this sound until this summer, driving in the heat. I had the A/C running in Auto mode through the winter and spring, didn't think high temperatures would affect it. The shop doesn't think anything else can be done. I'm searching on the forum and some people have said the A/C compressor can be noisy compared to other cars. I bought my XKR last November, so this is my first summer in the car and now I'm wondering if this is actually normal, even though it sure sounds a bit weird.
Did you ever find a fix? Did the whirring become more consistent and does it go away when you turn the A/C off?
