Default Won't shift into drive

Hello all, Went to move my 2007 XK convertible today after a week of sitting. everything was just fine, I drove out of one space and into my garage. Had to reverse to reposition while trying to get int o the garage, but after that it wouldn't go into drive. The lever moves into position, but the light does not light up. It stays in Neutral and neutral stays illuminated. shifting into sport does not change anything. Reverse still works fine. What could this be?

Update: pulled the shifter assembly. everything looks okay there, could there be an internal failure on the assembly or should I start looking at things like shift cables?

That sounds like a VERY SERIOUS Transmission problem and I don't think it's anything you did wrong to cause this.Every Jaguar XKR I bought used ALWAYS seems like the idiot that had it before me that can afford its $100k price tag don't know how to keep it in the new condition they buy it in and it seems like they abuse the hell out of a very expensive nice looking car like this and I have NO IDEA why or who's dumb enough to pay an idiot a high salary to be able to afford an expensive car like this and don't know how to treat it in their possession! But anyway, the dashboard in my 2014 XKR is kind of broke(I didn't do it,I bought it used so the usual idiot broke it when it was theirs)and got a "gangster lean" when i open it and I have to close it a "ghetto" way by trying to hold it in the position that it suppose to normally close in by default if it wasn't broken when I bought it used like that. But to try to help you out,I think you might have to do a battery pull to reset the car so it recognize what gear it's in or...Send it to the Jaguar dealership and if they can't do their OEM reset(Is what i like to call it)Then the idiot that had it before you got rid of it cause they KNEW they did something to that Jag that will cost somebody else an arm&a leg in the future after they traded it in for something else...That's what happens when you buy your Jag off a stupid rich person that use to have it that have no business being able to afford this kind of car

I've had the car for about three years. It's pretty well maintained and the trans has always been serviced. I think it's likely that it is a shift cable issue. Will definitely do a hard reset on the battery tomorrow.

Gotta admit, you have me kinda nervous (haha) got out of bed to go do a hard battery reset. No codes on OBDII either. That could be because my reader is garbage though. Here's to hoping it's a Solenoid or the Shift Cable. I have a feeling it's gonna end up being the latter, but man I's praying it isn't gonna need a rebuild.

a hard reset should pretty much fix it if you never heard your Jaguar having a hard time trying to switch gears.Mine had a transmission fault code 1 time pop up near the odometer screen, but that's only cause i removed the throttle body on my car when it was running trying to figure out why it won't stay running when I finally figured out it was nothing but the fuse box gone bad on it.Well anyway, the transmission fault code didn't go away until i did a hard reset by removing the battery cables on it for almost a whole week. When i screwed back on the battery cables, that fault code was gone and my car was working the way it should when i fixed it back

Does this car have the 2 bolts holding the shift cable to the trans? If so, they're known for working loose or falling out...

The transmission has never made any straining noises or slipped. Guess the fuses are something I should check too. I did the hard reset where you hold the battery cables together for 30 seconds. no dice.

That's probably it then. You might wanna check the fuses too to see if any of them are blown.Sometime a fuse could blow for as simple as the security alarm fuse on the car and cause the whole car not to work right.Remember,it's a fuse box in the middle of your back seat you might want to check and that's the 1 that really controls the security system in your car and that's also the fuse box that I had to replace.

Had this issue before. It was a loosening of the assembly that caused the issue.

Which assembly? Did you have to replace the shifter?

This really sounds like the fix since others experienced the same thing.Looks like Jaguar over looked a recall and wanna make people pay to fix this common issue

Tighten up the assembly. There is a section in the workshop manual, Selector Lever Cable Adjustment.
There was no need for parts in my case.

It was a loose cable bracket on the transmission. Tightened it up and she's good as new.
