Unhappy XK Navigation Backlight off

Hello guys I,m new in this forum and I need your help. I have an XK 2007 8K miles on the clock, the navigation screen brightness can not be set manually nor automatica above the middle line because the back light turn off, I can still see the menu with a flash light and everything works but the back light, once I took down the brightness below middle line the light is on again, it is fine at night but during the day is hard to see, I was advice by the dealer that some cars have the problem with over heat of amplifier "bulletin" and they install a fan to solve it but after they check my car again they told me is not the problem because my navigation and functions still working even with the back light off. Now they say they will replace the touch screen part $1000 USD and labor $300. Some one in this forum know who can repair the screen at not dealer cost? An Ipad screen cost $180 how come a low resolution screen may cost 3 times more.

I'm just guessing here but does your speedo backlight turn on at night and switch off daytime? If not it could just be that the car thinks it is dark all the time, i.e. a sensor gone bad or accidentally covered up by a sticker or something. (You use both XK and XF in your description but I was told the screen in a 2007 XK is the same as 2008 / MY 2009 screen.

the speedo is fine, the back light blackout not just dim, if I adjust the brightness to automatic still on for 1 minute and then just turn off but I said i can see the screen functions in the back with a flask light or under sunlight, I can use the functions there and go back to brightness less than 50% and the light is back on.

Does it black out in automatic at night as well? If not I'd guess it is a fault between the logic output from the control to the power chip for the backlight. If blacks out at night too it could also be the power chip itself. (It is some years since I worked on the hardware level of those things but I don't think the principles have changed.) If you or somebody you know are adept at repairing surface mount electronics you could have a go, otherwise I'd say it is replacement time. There should be some write-offs in the wreckers yards by now so a specialist could maybe do it cheaper? IIRC the replacement must be programmed for your car to accept it so not a DIY job unless you invest in Ford IDS with Jag software (or 3rd party if you dare )

I guess you have tried this alrady, but if not: Rule out the possibility of a software glitch. With ignition off pull the fuse for the touch display, wait 10 secs, put it back. The fuse is in the block in the right hand side of the boot, behind a cover. The owners handbook lists which fuse it is.

Have you tried setting the contrast to higher or lower levels to see if that has any effect on the brightness level adjustment?

Sounds like you're screwed. If you don't want to pay the full shot, you'll have to try to get the touch screen from an auto junkyard and have them or someone else install it unless the dealer will do it. The junkyard will usually guarantee the thing (along with its installation if they do it) in writing for a certain number days. If someone else installs it and it doesn't work, you can at least get another unit or your money back for the unit, but you'll be out the installation charges.

See my post further up: The IDS has to be used for the car to accept a new unit, So a Jag dealer or fully equipped specialist must install.

Did the dealer just upgrade and reset the IAM or every computer in the car. I don't think you have to touch anything except the IAM when adding the ipod module. The touch screen is quite separate.

Hi Rick, thanks for your comment. I too, have the same issue but haven't tried messing with the brightness of the screen yet. Did you ever find a solution to the problem? Back lighting does sound like the cause of an issue as all the functions are still there on the screen. I have turned of auto and the brightness is set to 50% so I'll see what happens. I can't believe such a car company would not have tied this issue down. Now you cannot even buy TSD units unless they are used and judging by this forum it's a common issue. I would appreciate you comments on any solution you found.

I just want to add that when I run the car in my garage, which is not brightly lit, the TSD seems to be fine. It's when I'm out on the street with it I lose the display.

I have just gone through a screen replacement due to a backlight fail on mine. The screen assembly is Toshiba LTA070D010F. They are available for about $100 on eBay.

It is all plug and play, but there are a lot of screws to remove, and you should be familiar with how to plug and unplug flat flex cables without damaging them similar to those on a laptop computer.

Hi White XKR, what year is you car. Mine 2007 XK8. So you only replace the screen not the whole touch screen system? Do all XK8's have this same screen do you know? Thanks for posting your answer.

I think you mean 2007 XK, and yes that is what I have.

You also can get the whole used display unit on eBay used (see https://www.ebay.com/itm/JAGUAR-XKR-...IAAOSwirFa8J5v). These are easier to swap out, but they tend to cost much more. I believe you would have to get one from a 2007-2009 model for compatibility without reporgrammng.

I think I may have discovered my issue which may still require your solution. Someone posted a message that had exactly the same problem I have. They said that when in manual mode (not Auto) if they went above 50% on screen brightness the screen went out. At 50% all was good. I had mine originally in Auto and the screen would go out after about 10 or 15 mins but all the functions were still there on the touch screen. I think the problem is that when you power the display for a bright screen you lose the screen altogether. When running the car in a dark garage I had no screen issues. So I think it is the ambient light monitor or high power screen causes it to fail and it's only the backlight that fails. After searching the MOST circuit and driving myself nuts this seems to be the solution as I just got back from a 1 hour drive with no issues after setting the brightness to 50%. However, with the top down, bright sun and sun glasses on you cannot see the screen real clear at 50% but I'll take that over a black screen. Of course, with these cars you need more than one drive to check if it has fixed the problem. I took a look at your Toshiba suggestion and it does look like a better fix than swapping the whole TSD out.
