Default XKR 2010 - aluminium trim is matted!

Hello!

I own a red XKR 2010.
On both sides, the oval aluminium trim round the back window are now mated.

It seems a material problem.
Is this common?

Welcome to the forum Nosferatu!

Ah you mean "matted" as in lost it's shine. I have the same with the chrome trims around the windows on my X-Type. I used a silver polishing cloth (the type used for polishing cutlery) and they were shiny again, but eventually it went dull once more.

I think it's because the trim is actually made of aluminium and it eventually oxidises. The way around this would be to polish and then coat them with some kind of wax or sealant. I haven't bothered with it yet...

BTW, why don't you introduce yourself in the New Member Area - Intro a MUST you might get some more interest in your problem.

We also have a forum dedicated to Europe, see the link in my signature.

On a 2010 MY, shouldn't this be covered by warranty?

It's not a warranty issue -- it's just a cleaning issue. Just like polishing the tailpipes... just clean and shine them.

WD-40 with a clean rag will do the trick very nicely, just discovered!

On the driver side of my car the "chrome" trim around the windows has had a blotchy look like water stains for two years. I just tried the WD 40 and it worked!!! I'll see what it looks like in the morning but right now it looks new! WOW!

WD-40 may be a nice sealant, for a while, but I can't see how it won't just return in time to the previous problem surface. This looks promising: Sharkhide

Here's a forum discussion that seems rather informative: http://www.ffcars.com/forums/17-fact...n-wd-40-a.html

Ooo, look at this one: http://boeshield.com I'm getting excited now

Mine is evenly matted all the way around the window trim, however, it matches the 20" Senta wheels. I like the look of it myself.
To each their own....
