XKRS speedo into XKR - Does it work?
Hello,
I'm having a small "first world problem" with the speedo of the XKR.
Unfortunately the original speedometer in the XKR goes up to 270kph and after doing some test drives recently the car also is governed at 270kph on the speedo (GPS measured kph will be way lower I guess).
While I'm going to have the speed limiter removed and the ECU remapped I will probably hit higher speeds and not knowing how fast you are actually going might be bit of a problem.
Is it possible to swap the original XKRS speedometer - which goes up to 300 - into the regular XKR or will the immobilizer have some issues with this?
Is the current mileage also saved in the ECU only or also in the speedometer? Thanks a lot.
Best regards

As you have a 2007 XKR 4.2L did you mean the cluster from the 4.2L XKR-S, that seems to go to 300km/h
You can still order the cluster as a spare part;
C2P17847 for km/h
C2P17848 for Mph with km/h subscale
Around £1310 for either plus VAT from UK suppliers, then you need to program it in.
Arden does a 320km/h speedometer upgrade http://shop.arden.de/jaguar/xk/xk-fr...aufhebung.html but at €5,355.00 incl. MwSt it's certainly not cheap.
Assuming that the wiring connections are the same between the clusters, it would be possible in theory, but more complicated from the programming side of things.
First the cluster will need to be programmed to the car because of security/immobiliser. The car will not run if you just physically swap the cluster.
Second the mileage is recorded in the cluster, to change the mileage recorded to the actual mileage of the car requires coded access. Only a few people can do this.
Third you might have to mess around with different files while programming to get the cluster to read correctly.
I know someone who might be able to do this, also to remove the speed limiter at the same time. Problem is he's not in Germany...

Well thats the main question, how complicated is the immobilizer and I already guessed that ECU, cluster and keys have to match each other while everything is wired together but thats something the regular Jaguar dealer can do.
The mileage will definitly be the larger problem.
@thocar:
München.
Regarding the speed limiter: The limiter was already removed when I bought the car so I dont know who removed it.

I don't think it will be as simple as installing the XKR-S dash and reflashing it to the car.
It could be that if you do that it will flash the cluster with the standard XKR file, because the system will look up the VIN of your car and it's an XKR, not an XKR-S. You need to get the XKR-S cluster file loaded, but that's not so straight forward to do and I doubt a Jaguar dealer would want to even try it. It involves some hacker-type stuff because you can't "choose" which firmware to flash to the cluster, it's automatically selected based on the VIN of the car.
I recently did something similar with my Land Rover, loaded a custom-written file to the cluster which added some functions that were missing/disabled. It required things an official dealer probably won't or can't do...

I think trying to adapt a later model speedometer is an exercise in futility.
To what end? Just how often do you run at 300+? I suspect it is not every day or even every week.
For those times you do need to know true speed, the best measure is a GPS. If the Jaguar GPS does not measure at your limit, then a simple, cheap handheld GPS will do the job nicely. There is some lag in typical GPS, but it is still workable.

Take a closer look - the 4.2 R-S cluster only goes to 280kph and 180mph, the same as my 75. Since mine is actually limited to 300, the speedo goes off the clock at max speed. Fortunately, I was using my Road Angel GPS (camera warning system) just as a digital speedo when I was doing autobahn runs, and it gave me a actual speed reading.
Frankly, having to glance down to check the speedo at that velocity would have been a distraction I didn't need. I preferred to keep my eyes on the road, watching for people rocketing along at 200k and pulling out in front of me.
