Default Battery vent tube.

I checked my battery for the vent tube and it is missing. On the attached picture is the arrow showing the battery vent to the vent discharge exit?

Yes, you should supply a Vent Tube from the Battery to the Hole and it should extend down through the grommet 8" or so.

I noticed this winter when I pulled the battery that mine is missing also. I should probably fix it, but I never remember to get any tubing.

This is the kind of thing we can get away with 99 times out of 100, but that 1% can be a real b**ch. Ka-boom!

So, if running without a vent tube, until that's fixed what conditions would make a lot of hydrogen and so create a danger? There are two I can think of:
- an unusually high reading on the voltmeter would indicate an overcharging condition. That can make a lot of hydrogen.
- if the battery has been fully dscharged or close to it, it will be recharging very rapidly even with a normal voltage reading. That could be trouble too.

FWIW ...

Battery vent tube.

Ok, it sound like a project I need to do. But what does it look like with a vent tube in place and does anyone have the procedures?

Thanks in advance!

I just bought some clear vinyl tubing from Home Depot. I'll install it tomorrow and take a pic to post.

A few minutes later: OK as I was typing the above, I got an itch that really needed scratching. I had to go and put the vent tube on. A few minutes later and I am back to report success on this easiest project I have ever done to my car. 10 minutes tops!!

Very nice, Lew. And with clear tubing, you can watch those little H2 molecules going by.

Would it be worth posting the tube diameter? With a little luck, there might be a standard size among the various battery makers. Not sure about this though.

I don't know what is standard as this is my first time working with a vented battery. The nipple on the Interstate battery is football(USA) shaped. The ID of the tube I got is 5/16" and fits on the battery nipple very snugly.

Default battery venting

I've been following the battery vent thread but I don't think anyone has mentioned that on batteries with two vent holes, one hole needs to be plugged (my Autozone battery came with a plug for this purpose molded into the positive terminal cover flap) while the other one goes to the vent tube. Comments?

Those would be batteries manufactured by Johnson Controls for a number of brands.

The plug is supposed to be molded into the positive terminal protector. You snap it off and insert into the unused vent hole.

There is a BMW battery vent elbow that fits perfectly. It also fits the stock vent hose on a X308 perfectly.

The hose is 3/16-7/32 inside diameter.

Question

Thanks to this thread I found that I had a vent tube, but it was not connected to the battery. After reconnecting it, I also saw an electrical plug next to the battery that is unplugged and nothing nearby to plug into. Everything is operational, so anyone know what it is?

That connector is used for when the vehicle is shipped, its plugged in to keep the battery from going flat.

Nice fix Lew!!!

Default XRK Battery Vent Tube

After reading this thread I checked and found that I also did not have the battery vent tube on the XK.

Easy fix and as it was put..."99 times out of 100"...

This is a great forum.

Thanks!

Old thread, but I am fixing mine tomorrow. I just installed a new Interstate and did not connect a tube. The old battery did not have one connected. Interstate has kits for about $5. Thanks for this thread.
