$785.00 circuit board to fix gears, Huh?
XK8 2004 55K miles Special Edition Jaguar still has no gears past drive, D blinks and S button doesn't work. After you all gave me sound advice when my car died my attorney (BMW guy) went to the shop and they convinced him I had forced the gears (after driving it fine since 2006) and stretched gear lines, disengaging gears past drive and the S button. I rarely drive or let it out past 50 miles per hour. They said they repaired only the mechanics by replacing a throttle. Gears on left n S button not working requires a new circuit board under the gear shift. They said pay $785.00 for part and $400.00 or more for labor, bring it in and in one hour next day it will be fixed. Huh? After reading your advice I called back and said I will need the old part. Errrr...O.K. It will take 2 weeks to get the part. While driving recently it died. I pulled over. Restarted it. ALL GEARS WORKED AND S BUTTON. NOTHING BLINKING. It had reset itself. I am disputing the charge for the part they ordered. I'm scheduled to take it in tomorrow but I am not. Probably have to sell it. It was good until they "fixed" my starter. Still didn't start well and all these odd problems have eviscerated what used to be a smooth performance car. I'm sad. I already paid $$$$ for "new" starter and $5000.00 for gears to work, which they do not. Sadly today the restart reverted back to no gears past drive. Am I correct in not paying for a "new circuit board under the gears" which they ordered but have not installed? Thank you in advance for your valuable input.

After all your advice I said I did not want the part they ordered or have them work on my car. They said too late, charged my card and they ordered a specialized part which could not be returned. They would not refund me and I had no choice to refuse them installing. I didn't want to mess them up so I Took it in today as they said new circuit under shifter would fix the gears they disengaged, S button, Roof, car dying, ABS, DSC light. So After a couple hours I had to pay another $900.00 for labor. I drove away. Nothing was fixed. And now windows don't close. No gears past Drive, etc etc. I called my bank but they had already run my card. Another $1700.00 gone. Car was fine until they touched it by putting in a "new starter"last year. They also did not give me the parts they replaced. I'm giving up as we have no good Jag mechanics here. Going to sell it at a loss of course. I believed them because they seem to really believe themselves. It's a beautiful car, 55K miles. Drove beautifully for 5 years until they "fixed"it. Going to try to get a safe 2014 C250 Sedan Mercedes. I was just trying to not sell a unfixed car so down the rabbit hole I went. Caution to you all. Just because you honor a deal doesn't mean the other person will. Times have certainly changed. But thank you all for helping me climb out of the Hole

You can still contact your credit card company direct and place a hold on the amount while it is being investigated. Even if they have paid the repair place, they can charge back the amount against future credit submissions.
I think they give you at least 30-days to show it was an invalid charge.
However, the next step should be a lawyer. If your problems have gotten worse even with the additional parts and repair, I think you have a case.
BTW, the window issue might be easily fixed with a hard reset. I assume they disconnected the battery and that makes the windows lose their memory in the convertibles.

Without having any codes and not fully understanding the no gears past “D” I am at a loss but if I were to guess I would first be looking at the shifter cable adjustment. This transmission shifts electrically. You move the shifter it operates a cable to move a lever on the left of the transmission. That lever moves the linkage to the other side of the transmission to the shifter selector switch that switch tells the transmission control module (TCM) what gear you selected and it works the valvebody in the transmission to do what you selected. Now keep in mind that the engine control module is (ECM) talking to the transmission control module (TCM) at the same time. As all of that is taking place the lights on your shifter illuminate telling you what position you selected and that is coming from the shifter selector switch & the TCM. If the cable were out of adjustment the “D” could blink and without codes at the moment I would say check the cable adjustment.

Do you know the codes they pulled? If so please post them.

Has your shifter cable been checked for proper adjustment?

The Synthetic I assume is the motor oil. I do not understand the “Stopping, using handbrake n restarting resets but only for about 5 minutes”.
For a test on the shifting put your shifter in position #5 or #6 whatever applies and drive the car and see if it shifts properly. Not to worry the car will shift on its own from low gear to the highest gear but will not go into overdrive. If it shifts properly then I would be looking at your shift cable adjustment and the TSB attached will help.
