1998 XK8 Convert Top Binding?
Prior to my 'green shower', I was able to manually lift the top with relative ease. Since the hose breakage, with the manual latch unlocked, I can't lift the top at all. Seems it's binding somewhere. The valve at the pump is closed and I have the four new lines installed in the rear seat area. The two lines that control the latch area are disconnected from the pump. How can this binding issue be solved?
Thank you.
Thank you.

If you are trying to open the roof manually you will need to open the petcock on the pump and unlock the two lift rams. To unlock the lift rams you will need to apply pressure on the top of the rams. See link http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto...oof%20Rams.jpg The rams lock the roof to prevent it from bouncing on the windows when they are closed.

Hello Gus:
Although I should know this, I just made a hard copy of http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto...oof%20Rams.jpg to keep with the hex key in case I forget, panic, and I am tempted to do something that I shouldn't!

Unlocking the hinge worked great! Just used the claw part of a hammer and easy-peasy. After running all the new lines, filling the reservoir and running the top a dozen times, now the top latch isn't locking. It goes about halfway and then nothing. Is there something I'm supposed to do to make it work all the way? Thank you!

First let me say that the roof is dependent on the proper level of fluid so the first thing I would check is the fluid level. Fill the fluid to the top embossed line and do not be concerned with the position of the roof. Now to go further on troubleshooting I will need a little more information on what is taking place.
Often with the changing all the lines the major problem is being patients when operating the roof. This system is self purging and it takes time to clear the air from the lines. Now if you have been pressing the roof open/close button often the system may be confused.
As a final note this system is dependent on having the correct line connected to the correct fittings. The pump is bidirectional and the roof is dependent on the correct connections.

Hi Gus,
I carefully replaced all six lines and I know they're correct, thanks to color coding the old ones with colored zip ties. I ran the top several times and refilled the fluid many times until it leveled out. Is there any special procedure for purging the air from the lines? Thank you

No the system is self purging. Just let it continue the operation.
