Default Use unlock on the remote key fob or....

Simple - use the unlock button on the remote key fob, or simply turn the master “black” key.

First do you have more than one key? If you do then try each to manually unlock the trunk. When it opens with that key then go and start the car with the same key.
If you have only one key and it will not unlock the trunk manually then you only have a valet key. You will need to get a new key. Fortunately a dealer can cut one from the VIN number with proof of ownership. Lucky you, it is 98 MY and doesn't have a chip that needs programming saving you a few bucks.

The BOOT lights MUST come on. (or the INSTPK BOOT OPEN message)

That is the only way to signal the BPM/SLCM to cancel the VALET MODE.

I had a broken wire going back to the boot light (at the flex point where the boot hinges) and couldn't get the car out of valet mode. Just to add to above ^^^.
