1999 XK8 Transmission Oil Sump Bolts (ZF 5HP24)
Hi All,
First post here so firstly want to say thank you to all the forum contributors who have made owning my XK8 so much simpler.
This week I've completed a full service of my transmission, oil, filter, gasket etc. I've also installed the TransGo PR valve to protect the transmission.
Sadly 1 of the 22 bolts holding the oil sump pan on shredded it's torx on removal (I was using a specially purchased T27). It seems near impossible to find a direct OEM or like for like replacement in the UK.
Does anyone have any experience or contacts for sourcing one of these bolts? Not being an expert these seem fairly unique in their appearance but I'm not sure how much that changes the usability.
Bolt spec is - M6X22mm T27 capped screw. Notable uniqueness is the non threaded 2mm under the cap and the slightly chamfered tip.
Jag part number is JLM888 - Sadly Jag themselves were unable to help or advise.
Any help greatly appreciated and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
Thanks
Scott

I bought a set of machine screws online for my X150 with a larger Torx size to avoid future stripping out. I also went to stainless steel plus anti-seize which will make future removal much easier. I'm not sure whether these are the correct size for your X100, as it's many years since I did the XK8, but you can check that yourself.

Hi,
The ZF part # is 0736 101 318 which may help you to source one - or a breaker's yard? BMW used the same box, and some here have used T40 from the later 6HP26 transmission.
TBH, I'd go with something like Richard's suggestion, definitely along with the anti-seize. From what I've read here, you were lucky only to lose one:- having the correct T27 definitely helps!

Thanks all - as expected very useful information.
This was actually one of my first reactions. I went straight online and bought - https://amzn.eu/d/iVHZl6l
Given the differences in the shape I wasn't sure if these were suitable. The originals also have a floating washer. Did those who fitted new bolts include a washer or fit without?
If these will work as a substitute I can get on and get the job finished this afternoon.
Thanks
Scott

Just an FYI, these same bolts fastened the pans of thousands of BMW 5HP19 and 5HP24 transmissions, from at least as far back as 2000, up to 2004, or so, whenever they went to the 6-speed boxes. So, just about any place that handles BMW parts will have them. I know the BMW dealers around here, as a last resort, still stock the bolts.
And T27 was a stupid choice - too close to T25, and far too many DIY-ers tried using T25 bits to their dismay.

Hi All,
Job is now completed and everything seems to be running smooth. Massive thank you for the advice. I actually decided not to use washers in the end as the cap heads (now t30) seemed to cover the same surface area as the original bolts with washers.
As a side note, so far, highly recommend the TransGo PR valve. The shifts R to D and back again are transformed. My car has 93000 miles on it and had developed the dreaded bang shifts.
Thanks again.

Funny, I just did the exact same thing last night. I had put a new front VB section, with the Transgo kit, in my old transmission, which eventually failed anyway, for other reasons. I replaced it just a few months ago with a 66K mile unit from a Jag wrecking yard, but saved the VB for future use. The replacement worked fine but on certain occasions I'd get the bang shift when almost coming to a stop, the car was still in 2nd gear, and then the light would change and I'd accelerate and the trans would downshift with a BANG. I pulled out that section and swapped in the section I'd saved from the other trans, filled with fresh fluid, and TA-DAAAAA. It launches hard from a stop and I've not been able to duplicate that dreaded bang upshift.
These kits make a world of difference, no doubt.
Hello,
The originals are available from Rock Auto (ATP part# ZX221) who ships worid-wide. US $22.79 for a set (22) with attached washers. I used these about 7 years ago and have another car to do this winter. I had several heads strip back then, and promised myself to look into using hex flange heads next time (hex socket may not fit, any comments?). After stripping the torx sockets, I drilled just the socket slightly larger, then drove a T30 socket —tapping lightly— into it and used a light duty impact driver to remove some. Where that failed, I used a serrated (triple square) bit of suitable size (probably 6mm) available as a set from Performance Tools at many auto parts stores). Where this failed, I used a larger drill bit—maybe ¼" to remove just the head of the bolt. I found the threaded part to be unfrozen, apparently the corrosion was only between the cap and the pan (I had previously heated all bolts and used PB Blaster around the heads and on the ends of any through bolts). I was, then able to remove threaded portions by using a broken hex drive drill bit as a screw extractor in the 'well' left by the ¼" drill, the sharp corners bite into the bolt if you push firmly on the impact driver (This works well on any small bolt, not too corroded, where a standard extractor is likely to break).
Best, Rick

Hi Does anyone know of a UK source for the Transgo valve?
Or is it just bought from USA
I have that occasional Bang problem but also have a slight whne when cold..
Drained, changed filter etc. used the ZF fluid..Then got it hot and topped up fluid..Maybe too hot and still not enough fluid?
Thanks all

I couldn't find one when I was searching. The one I fitted recently came from eBay. I believe the sender is in the US but it came quick (within 2 weeks) and without any hassle.
Only downside is the £19 delivery.

I couldn't find a european supplier either.
I got mine from Rockauto:
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...AsVgG8cGYbE%3D
Better than the Ebay price, but there's £20 postage on top of that. You'll probably have UK VAT slapped on it too.
I've just checked back and the Rock place's price is virtually the same as I paid in 2017.
BobRoy and DonB have done a superb 'how-to' if you decide to do this job:

They're not available in the UK, but I bought one from these guys last year: https://www.ganzeboom.net/en
From memory they don't specifically list it, but do supply it. Drop them an email - they speak English!

Boy did I get a wrong number! Just call me wrong-way Corrigan. I guess that when I came in from the garage yesterday afternoon after working for two hours in 20⁰ F temperature, my brain was as numb as my fingers. I'm so used to changing pounds to dollars that I did it backwards and didn't realize it 'til I was in bed going over my days work in my mind. Apparently my subconscious was aware because it suddenly occured to me. I hope, at least, I didn't go backwards on converting any torque values.
Anyway, here's a corrected version:
