2000 and before XK8 motor oil cooler question
Did the 2000 or pre 2000 XK8s have no engine oil cooler?
I'm working on an engine that seems to have two blank ports, blanked off holes, at the front of the upper oil pan where my 2002 XK8 has a the same two holes (a bit larger in diameter) where I have two oil lines. One line out to the oil cooler in front of the rad,,, one return. The 2000 engine I have HAS the holes, bit they go no where. They go in about an inch then are basically closed off, blanked. Has a little hole where my 2002 has a threaded hole, smaller in diameter than the 2002, and unthreaded... I'm puzzled..

I’ve “heard” that all the 4.0 XKR’s have oil
coolers, but not all the XK8’s.
I don’t know how true that is, or what determines why some 8’s get the coolers and some don’t.

The 2002 cooler hoses don't/wouldn't fit, the diameter of the connects at the engine end are bigger than the orifices at the false holes of the 2000 motor. If the 2000 motor DOESN'T have the cooler it's only a relief,,, I'm in the middle of an engine swap and I got stopped in my tracks. I was thinking I was going to have to shell out $200 or more for the new hoses and maybe a cooler rad. Or that maybe the hoses and ports were somewhere different on the upper pan.
If there is no cooler set up, if it was an option one could elect at purchase,,, it's a good thing for me at this point. We'll see.
Some do, some don't. I have read of two members owning '97 cars that do: Vern as above and and one in the UK. My 98 doesn't. JEPC shows both throughout the MYs.
Probably the same casting for both, machined as appropriate then assigned a different part # for each flavour.

I took this today. Like you said Mike, same casting. I took this today before pushing ahead. Car whipped my butt today, exhausted, but I intend on adding a little something about the swap in a thread I started a long long time ago when I was asking if the swap was possible.
my 2001 XK8 with the original engine does not have an oil cooler. My friend's 98 XK8 does not have one either and is original. Both are US spec cars.

My October 1996 (1997 MY) XK8 UK specification has an oil cooler - cause I saw it today when completing an oil change. I also inspected the hoses which run into the lower block where they can weep. Stay safe all
Lol,,, now can ya please please tell me how to replace a transmission coolant line with the engine IN the car. Omgoodness... The doggone engine was just out!
Ever wanna ball up ya fist,,,, and punch your own self in the choppers!? One ah them days.
I am SOOOOOO tempted to, for now, just cut both ends at the couplers and run a soft hose with like 4 hose clamps at each end... one at rad one at trans RH side... All them damn twists and turns don't sound like fun with them fiddly aluminum lines...
At this stage I can have the entire top of the engine, intake and throttle body off and out of the car in 20-30 min... That and moving the electrics in the back, does that get ya there with the hard lines? LH motor mount out for room?
It can't be too painful, lol, right?
Omgoodness!!! Damn damnit

Oops! If you haven't got the exhaust (LHS cat at least) back on yet, then it shouldn't be too bad. I did sort of a write-up here:

Mike! You can not believe how much your thread just helped me make up my mind. Believe it or not I have an almost new set of lines in hand,,,, but I ain't gunna do it! And I know this will bother some folks. And, it's temporary-ish...
My split is exactly the area of the first photo in the post/thread. It's bad. Could hear the fluid ruahing... Took less than a min to pump a gooooood amount of fluid out. Anywho
I will remove the fitting at the rad - cut the soft line. Dremel off the old ferrules or what that fitting is called, to see what's underneath. Will get 3ft of 1/2in O/D oil fuel rated hose and mash it over the aluminum tubing. 2 or 3 hose clamps if needed. Same on the other side.
I just CAN'T do more right now. I jus spent 4 straight days on the engine swap. Dirty, tired, with a few curse words,,, 3 shears bolts and and and...
When I "finished" after 3 or 4 doulbe checks, I turned the key and she FIRED right up - I mean perfect. A bit of smoking from the marvel in the cylinders I'd guess... Smooth running and I was glad,,,, until. Damn it. Pool of trans fluid...
1/2 inch OD hose ya think?

Hey Jay,
Understand why you wouldn't want the extra pain of those lines right now - especially if you need the car back in service.
I'm pretty sure the aluminium part of the cooler line has a ridge (annulus? - sorry don't know the technical term) formed under the ferrule to prevent the flexible section from just sliding off. If you can cut the ferrule off without nicking the aluminium then you should be OK to use a pair of clamps to hold a new piece of flexible hose for the time being.
You need 1/2" *internal diameter* hose - the aluminium piping is 1/2 OD. I'm still not sure what the trans pump delivers - the 6HP apparently can be up to 4 bar, I assume (!) the 5HP will be similar, so check that the fuel line will handle that. You can look at AN fittings & braided pipe as BobRoy has suggested for the permanent fix.
Great news on the start-up and well done. There's always a Yes! moment when a big job comes together.
Sounds like you deserve a beer or two!
