Default 2000 XK8 Coupe NO CRANK

This not a no start problem. If it cranks it starts. Once in awhile after parking the car, it will not crank. Headlites on bright honk horn shows good battery. New agm battery and alternator,
Turning keyto start position: no click from park solenoid, car locked in park, instrument cluster lights still full bright, heater panel lights beep and showsAnyone had this happen?

Eliminate the obvious first. A poor/loose connection in the HPPM (High Power Protection Module):

Lights etc continue to work but insufficient power to crank.

Sounds like the brake switch. When that happens, gently activates the brake pedal on and off a few times to see if you can restore a bit of life into the switch, just enough to start the car. The brake switch tells the computer your foot is on the pedal and allows the shift lever to come off of Park by releasing the solenoid you mentioned. No need to jam the pedal, this switch activates with just the initial bit of pedal travel. You should be able to hear the faint click if you listen for it (it is actually 2 switches being activated together). If this diagnostic is confirmed, there are plenty of posts detailing the (somewhat painful) procedure to replace it. Prices for this switch are a bit all over the place, but individual component switches for this part have been identified and allow for a cheap repair in exchange for a bit of time and basic soldering skills.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Default Clean connections

I have gone through the module, battery, grounds that I can find, connection by ecu in engine compartment and alternator conection on the fender. Got a half turn out of several connections and the battery terminals were not the cleanest. Will wait till it happens again. Problem is I am usually alone and its hard to crank and test by yourself even if you brought a meter. Thanks for the input, I will pull the schematics and see what controls the interlock on the transmission. Maybe that will lead me somewhere.

Id put money on a bad connection, probably earth. I had exactly the same problem. https://www.jaguarforum.com/showthre...=1#post1064865
Also had the same problem on my BMW a few years ago. Another weird problem the car would not start unless I slammed the driver door shut. My garage mate thought I was joking till he tried it. Turned out to be a dirty earth cable on the battery.

There is a microswitch in the park detent slot of the shifter that can get weak and not always indicate that the tranny is in park. This is called the not-in-park microswitch. If it does not tell the ECU that the tranny is in park, it will not activate the starter. If it is sporadic, sometimes wiggling the gear lever in the park slot can get it to work, but only temporarily. It is a part of the side plate for the shifter and comes with that part.

I'm betting you are experiencing the same issue as I did recently. The solution for me was a new ground cable to the battery. The original braided line looked just fine, but there was clearly an issue. Try wiggling it next time you have the no-start condition .

The next time it does it, try pushing the shift lever forward while turning the key. My shift lever went ever so slightly out of adjustment and caused a similar problem.
