Default 2000 XKR coupe

Hello,

Its been a while since I've owned another Jaguar. So I just purchased a 2000 XKR coupe with 99k miles from a auction site unseen, great body interior. I believe the tensor/timing chain failed. what would be the quickest way to confirm the problem. I have a new battery, it does not crank just a loud noise like a metal sound, then it rotated once only almost could it be the starter I wish..... Put the key in and clunk only no rotation. I have no history on the car but for $2k its worth it in parts but I would like to fix it reasonably if possible.

Any sound advise,

Thanks Bob

Pulled the left side valve cover (Drivers Side). No Damage to chain or tensioner. can rotate engine by hand from crank, so will do some more inspection this week. Drain oil remove starter and go from there.

Thanks Mototcarman

You still need to check the other side. Turn the engine over clockwise only as seen from the front to avoid bearing damage.

But do the flats on the camshafts line up on both heads? If yes does the engine turn smoothly by the crankshaft bolt.

Not sure what you mean, I can make any cam shaft flats line up if I turn them in position. Also removed drivers side valve cover no damage to upper tensor, I can depress the tensioner by hand, don't know if that means anything. Also some of the cam lobes have rust/corrosion on them looks like the car was sitting a long time or water? Coolant was low too, I can get some slack in the primary chain if I rotate it right. Looks like I need to dig deeper.

Thanks

Bob

I would buy new ally body secondary tensioners before doing anything else, fit them --use the zip tie method and then investigate the no crank, at worst it will be $60/ 100 bucks wasted and some time.
At best it will be a good engine saved and possibly a starter motor/battery/ring gear problem.

joesoap is correct about what you have!!

Yep, those are some GEN II plastic body tensioners. I would get them replaced ASAP.
Might be a faulty starter motor?? for the no-start problem.

Move the engine a few revolutions to be sure about no other obstructions.

Here is the link that we put in as a sticky when I did the secondary tensioners. There are pictures and a couple of added tricks I came up with. Have fun. This is a pretty straight forward job.

Angry Blown engine

I finally pulled the starter it's good, removed all plugs found water in cylinders 2,4,6. also no compression in 2,4,6,1,7. 240lbs in #8, 140 in#5, 90 in #3#. Guess it was over heated head gasket blown? Does anyone have any suggestions on a engine replacement.

Thanks Bob
