Default 2001 silverstone convertable top hydraulic relief valve

After we purchased our 2001 XKR silverstone (Atlanta Ga), we have had our mechanic (Euro Ultimate) do some basic maintenance, fluid change's, new belts, etc. After reading this forum and finding JagRepair.com, I also decided to buy the Hydraulic Relief Valve from LSI-Controls. Kit and instructions were perfect, mechanic installed, beautiful job. After installation, top would not unlock occasionally. What I discovered is that the previous owner had the resistor installed. I removed resistor today. I believe this should correct intermittent unlocking. Thoughts anyone? Also, thanks to all for helping me with the window programming, it works fine now.

Robert,

If I understand right, the system originally worked normally with the resistor only (otherwise, prior owner would have removed it, right?) ... now works normally with the valve only ... but gets in trouble with both resistor and valve installed. That's not too surprising, I guess, but it's not like I've thought about it in detail.

If you're done with the resistor ... Do you know if it is one of Reverend Sam's "plug and play" units? I can describe in more detail if needed. If so, I'd be glad to buy it from you as there are people looking for these, and Sam is not making any at present.

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks, Norri. Sam said only six units left, and (I think) at least two have been requested already. I should have said that I don't plan to make $$ on this, just to have on hand since requests do come up from time to time from outside the forum.

Yes - it was made to connect into both of the harness disconnect plugs, i just unplugged and reconnected the connectors. I was reasoning that both, the resistor and relief valve might reduced pressure too much for the unlock, but not sure. Anyways, we will continue to test top unlock every so often, and I will get back to forum with my observations.

Well no joy, wife just took jag out and the top would not open. A slight push up with your hand when the opening sequence is starting gets it moving. There are two small screws on the top plate, are these the only screws or are others hidden below the rubber seal? When cars gets back, I will attempt to remove cover plate and grease mechanism. Any advice on what I should look at is welcomed.

It may be that the system just won't be happy with both resistor and valve in place. Using both might be overkill, and it works OK with just one or the other, right?

Rather than poking at things, it might be easier just to remove one of the two. The resistor comes out very easily and, as you know, you have a ready buyer for it.

The relief valve is adjustable, so you could have it give you a little more pressure to get you over the hump. The other possible cause could be if you are a little low on fluid.

Thanks Keith. We called tech support on relief valve, they are recommending to dry lube the latch assembly. I check the fluid level, it is full. I also found another problem with the hoses. The outer rubber coating is falling off, as if it was dry rot. This leaves me with no choice but to replace. I found company Tophydraulics.com that has hose replacements and also can rebuild hydraulics with better seals. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations on hose replacements?

You will find a lot of info here with a search and much reading.
Gus also has a great deal of info on his site JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

Sorry, Robert, I see that I misunderstood. The problem persists even with the resistor removed, right?

Suggestion for latch lubrication: Belray Super-Clean chain lube. Very popular for use on motorcycle chains because it lubes well and does not attract dirt. A good fit for this job.

Thanks for the information on the lubrication. I am not looking forward to replacing the hydraulics lines, but with the wear that I can see, I have no choice. At least I have a few months with winter to prepare for the job.
