Default 2001 XKR 722.6 Transmission Leak

I have been chasing a transmission leak for a while. I have replaced the pan as the original was warped, a new gasket and bolts and of course the filter. I torqued the bolts to the correct requirement using the correct sequence toped off with 4 liters of Mercedes Benz oil and presto it still leaks. I was going add some UV dye and see if that helps find it. Any one had a similar issue and how did you fix it?

Regards...

My 2003 had 2 transmission fluid leaks.

1 located near center of the car. the other behind the front left tire.

Center leak I was able to see drops coming from the bellhousing. Since I had already replaced the sleeve (a common leak point) I had to get the unit re-sealed by a transmission shop.

The left tire are leak was a transmission cooler line leak, and we just replaced the hose.

If you search you can see my thread on these with pics.

Best!

Somewhere in the back of my memory, I seem to remember there is a "known problem" with these Merc transmission related to a leak at the electrical connector. I have seen posts about it, but as I do not own it, I passed on the details.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

TSBs are your friend. There are thousands of them that I and others spent (time wasted?) hundreds of hours uploading to this forum.

Jaguar spent time documenting faults and solutions to common faults.

Daimler Chrysler has the same fault and the same solution to the same gearbox.

Well known fault.

Default 2001 XKR 722.6 Transmission Leak Update

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention that I already changed the electrical connector and it is dry in that area. I think I might throw some UV dye in and see if that throws some light on it ( excuse the pun)

If applicable, have you checked all the connections/fittings/lines to/from the oil cooler? I assume it is the same as the ZF transmissions, using a cooler in the cold side of the main radiator.

I would be reluctant to throw a dye in there as a first attempt. Instead, I would try and clean the transmission as thoroughly as possible. Start with engine degreaser, maybe follow up with brake cleaner. Once dry and clean, it will be easier to isolate the leak.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I am curious to know where you sourced the replacement oil pan for the 722.6 transmission. Looking at typical suppliers in the USA, around $500 seems the norm. Which also seems excessive for a transmission also used in Mercedes Benz vehicles.

i have seen Mercedes ones for less than $100, but wondered if they were truly compatible?

Searching for a transmission pan for either 722.6 or W5A580 transmission, which I understand is the gearbox on the XKR up to 2002, typically returns pans that are radically different in price. Some of the pictures look a little different too.

I'm hopeful someone can tell me what they have purchased that worked.
