Default 2002 jag XKR transmission

Hi I have a 2002 Jag XKR with only 15k miles and the transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Whats the best source for a rebuilt transmission and is there a cross reference number for the 722.6 mercedes transmission and would it work? Thanks Bill

Why do you feel it needs to be replaced? These transmissions are rather tough and usually its an easily repairable problem such as a bad speed sensor or an issue with the conductor plate.

If you could provide more information we'd might be able to help more. AS stated the 722.6 is a solid transmission with 3 known failures none that require a rebuild. Since it's a 02 with 15k it's sat alot, good chance a fluid / filter would fix things up and be much cheaper to rebuild/replace. BTW the fluid change is a easy DIY

+1 with the two opinions above. I have 160,000 miles on my 2002 XKR and have never rebuilt. I have had both the conductor plate and sensor problems which resulted in transmission faults but were easily corrected. These Mercedes sourced units are very hardy, and it's highly unlikely that a car with only 15K miles on it has worn through the gears.

hi I had the electrical connector on the side of the transmission replaced approx 2k ago. Ive also read that this is a reliable transmission. I was driving at a steady speed on the freeway when a severe bang occurred 3 times in the transmission. I lost reverse gear and it was banging and grinding in drive. I took it to the shop and my mechanic pulled the pan and there is metal in the pan the fluid looked good it had been replaced when the electrical connector was replaced. My mechanic was the chief mechanic at mercedes and has rebuilt many 722.6 transmissions. He thinks it may not have been set up properly at the factory. He wont know until he takes measurements when he takes it apart.

Ok well that seems like an issue! Very odd. Honestly though you can find them used cheap enough. A reputable shop that does performance builds for hemi powered challengers etc would be a good source also. That transmission was used in a lot of high performance cars and not so high performance ones
