Mine level has always be up right at the top of the small round hole opening where the dipstick goes in. Is that the correct spot? That black dipstick is worthless for reading I think.

 

This out of the 2007 workshop manual but the setup is the same. Still use the steps on the cap for min max.

They specify the dexron 3 for the fluid (it's a FORD thing) so may want to check your owners manual before adding anything.

 

ok, do you check it cold or hot?

 

Don't think it matters, not like your oil.

If it's low top it off.

I usually check before I start the car.
